China Open: Top seed Ashleigh Barty battles to victory over Zheng Saisai


World number one Ashleigh Barty battled past home player Zheng Saisai to book her place in the quarter-finals of the China Open.

The Australian top seed took the deciding set of the third-round match to progress 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-2 to record her 50th WTA Tour win of 2019.

US Open champion Bianca Andreescu progressed after the Canadian defeated Belgian Elise Mertens 6-3 7-6 (5).

Fifth seed Andreescu extended her undefeated streak to 16 matches after beating the world number 23 in just under two hours.

American qualifier Jennifer Brady came from behind to knock out 11th seed Madison Keys, defeating her compatriot 2-6 6-4 6-4 to secure a meeting with Andreescu

Wednesday's late match saw third seed Elina Svitolina come through in three sets against American Sofia Kenin, winning 6-3 6-7 (8) 6-3.

Earlier, Czech player Petra Kvitova, the seventh seed, saw off Switerzland's Belinda Bencic 6-3 6-3.

Dutch eighth seed Kiki Bertens needed three sets to get past Polona Hercog 7-6 (6) 2-6 6-3.
