Barcelona Open: Andy Murray beats Albert Ramos-Vinolas

Andy Murray avoided losing to Albert Ramos-Vinolas for the second successive week with a battling performance at the Barcelona Open.

The number 10 seed, who had knocked Murray out in Monte Carlo last week, took the opening set in 41 minutes before the British top seed, continuing his return from an elbow injury, produced a trademark recovery and eventually progressed following a tie-break decider after more than three hours on court.

Fourth seed Dominic Thiem stands between Murray and a place in the final after the Austrian beat Japan's Yuichi Sugita 6-1 6-2.

Rafael Nadal also eased into the semi-finals with a 7-6 (7/1) 6-2 win over Hyeon Chung of South Korea.Nadal was tested by the world number 94 in the opening set, in which he was broken before winning it comfortably on a tie-break, but stepped up to finish the match in style.

Nadal's last four opponent will be Argentina's Horacio Zeballos, who was a 6-4 6-1 winner over Karen Khachanov of Russia.

At the Hungarian Open in Budapest, top seed Lucas Pouille secured his place in the semi-finals, but number two seed Ivo Karlovic is out.

Frenchman Pouille saw off the challenge of Slovakian Martin Klizan 6-4 6-3, while Croatia's Karlovic was defeated 6-4 6-3 by British number four Bedene.

Italy's sixth seed Paolo Lorenzi set up a semi-final against Pouille when he beat Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-4 6-4.

Bedene, who is closing in a return to the top 50, will play Laslo Djere after the Serbian pulled off an unexpected 2-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 win over Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, the number four seed.
