Players Championship: Neil Robertson battles past Mark Williams

Neil Robertson held off a fightback from world champion Mark Williams to reach the semi-finals of snooker's Players Championship.

Having trailed 2-1 early, Robertson rattled off breaks of 63, 62, 95 and 75 to move into a 5-2 lead only for Williams to take the next two and keep his hopes alive.

The Welshman then forced an opening in the 10th frame but was made to pay for breaking down as Robertson ruthlessly worked his way to the last four, where he'll face Judd Trump.

The pair met at the same stage of The Masters back in January, Trump taking that match 6-4 on his way to the title, and the left hander was also victorious when the pair met in this event a year ago.

Robertson though has looked back to his best of late and while unable to add to a pair of centuries against Joe Perry in the first round, will no doubt have been pleased with the manner in which he fended off Williams here.

Mark Allen became the third man through to the semi-finals as he defeated 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham 6-4 to make his fourth ranking event semi of the season.

It'll be a big one as well as Allen will now face the winner of Friday's John Higgins v Ronnie O'Sullivan showdown in Preston.

Thursday's Players Championship results

  • Mark Allen 6-4 Stuart Bingham
  • Neil Robertson 6-4 Mark Williams
