Defending champion Neil Robertson and Judd Trump have both progressed to the second round of the European Masters, while Jimmy White was beaten.
World number one Trump registered his first century break of the season on his way to a 5-0 win against 15-year-old Ukrainian Iulian Boiko in Milton Keynes..
But defending champion Robertson was made to work hard by Thailand’s Sunny Akani, who went 3-1 up after a break of 132 in the fourth frame.
The Australian won the next four frames, aided by three half-centuries, to seal a 5-3 victory.
World number six Kyren Wilson cruised through with a 5-1 win against Lee Walker, but four-time world champion John Higgins bowed out.
Higgins led 4-3 thanks to a break of 69, but Martin Gould, who made five half-centuries, won the last two frames to edge through.
Veteran Jimmy White made successive breaks of 132 and 76 to lead Ian Burns 3-1, but went down 5-4 after losing the decider.
Mark Williams, Ali Carter, Matthew Selt, Jack Lisowski, Scott Donaldson and Luca Brecel were among the first-round winners.
