World Championship: Fu, Murphy & Bingham progress

Marco Fu produced a superb comeback to beat Luca Brecel in the first round of snooker's World Championship while Shaun Murphy and Stuart Bingham also won.

The Hong Kong cueman trailed 7-2 after a nightmare first session on Sunday but stunned his Belgian opponent on Monday night by winning eight of the next 10 frames to edge through.

Fu, seeded eighth after a superb season, made breaks of 75, 83, 85 and 56 during his comeback run and he'll next meet either Neil Robertson or Noppon Saengkham.

Mark Allen also had to mount a fine comeback of his own to see off Jimmy Robertson 10-8, winning five of the last seven frames.

Earlier Shaun Murphy survived a scare to defeat teenage star Yan Bingtao 10-8.

The 2005 champion took an overnight 6-3 lead into the final session of his first-round clash and kept the Chinese qualifier at arm's length as he moved 9-5 up with the help of a superb break of 109 in the 13th frame.

But Bingtao, making his Crucible debut at the age of just 17, knocked in breaks of 94 and 70 as he won the next three frames before Murphy edged a scrappy 18th to progress 10-8.

He will next meet Ronnie O'Sullivan in a second round clash which begins on Thursday evening.

Murphy told worldsnooker.com: "My last victory here was the semis in 2015, so its been a while. I got beat in the first round last year and once he starts his comeback at 9-5 I’m just thinking that it is going to happen again.

"You just want to get in the second round and go home and feel like you’re in the tournament. I was bang under it and but for the fluked red and the decent clearance afterwards, it probably would have been a decider and then its a toss of a coin."

Bingham safely progressed to face Kyren Wilson, who beat David Grace on Sunday.

Ebdon had come through qualifying to earn his place in the first-round proper and fought back doggedly from a disastrous start to end Saturday's opening session at just 5-4 down.

But Bingham, who had lost in the first round either side of his Crucible title in 2015, took full command on Monday by taking five of the next six frames to book himself a clash with Wilson.

Bingham said: "It was very tough, Peter is a great player and a great champion. I’m over the moon to beat him 10-5, it didn’t feel like that way. I made some important clearances.

"Throughout the match it felt like he was potting the first red and I was playing catch up all the time. I made a massive clearance first frame today, especially with what happened last night, and that set the tone.

"It’s tough when  you are trying to get some rhythm and it seems that every frame is a hard graft , that is because Peter is so determined. The ninth frame last night just proves what a tough gritty player he is.

"I have Kyren Wilson next and he beat me a couple of weeks ago in China, hopefully I can get a bit of revenge on him."

Ding Junhui produced some of the best snooker seen so far in Sheffield as he earned a 7-2 advantage against compatriot Zhou Yuelong.

Ding won five frames without conceding a point and registered three centuries, including in each of the final two frames of the session to rubber-stamp his advantage.

John Higgins also charged to a 7-2 lead over world number 18 Martin Gould

The Scot hasn’t made it beyond the quarter-finals since his last World Championship victory in 2011 but looks in good form having made breaks of 57, 50, 65,76, 57,90 and 53.
