Off the mark in good style at Worcester in June before winning 4 times on the Flat. Down the field in testing ground on return to hurdles at Bangor in November, but may do better now handicapping under less testing conditions.

Desert Halo26

Beat a subsequent winner to open his account on handicap debut at Plumpton before bumping into a well-treated one at Hereford last time. There still looks to be some mileage in his mark and he may well resume winning ways.

Diesel Linet27
Age: 8|  Weight: 11-10| J: C J Todd| T: C & A Pogson| OR:  96| CD
Strong-travelling sort won twice over C&D last year and is fancied to go close in a race that should be run to suit, following a creditable fourth on reappearance at Market Rasen.

Age: 8|  Weight: 11-10| J: Tabitha Worsley| T: T Culhane & S Barclay| OR:  96| D
Runner-up over C&D before going one better at Warwick later in May, and he was perhaps still feeling those exertions, when finishing last of 4 in a Southwell handicap the following month.

Westerton233
Age: 6|  Weight: 11-8| J: Lewis Stones(3)| T: J Candlish| OR:  94
Let down by his jumping on qualifying run at Plumpton in 2024 and was below his useful best on the Flat for Alan King last year. Has joined new connections for 10,000 gns ahead of this handicap hurdle debut, and he's worth a market check, his yard also saddling Spartan Times.

Kalkaroo27
Age: 5|  Weight: 11-8| J: G Sheehan| T: Billy Aprahamian| OR:  94| BF
Justified support to get off the mark at Market Rasen in February and while he's remained in good heart with subsequent placed efforts there, his progress appears to have stalled.

Crown Of India163
Age: 5|  Weight: 11-7| J: Bryan Carver| T: A M Hales| OR:  93| D
Posted his best effort since winning a maiden at Worcester when sixth of 8 in a handicap at Wincanton last November, though that form looks far from robust.

Auntie Maggie209
Age: 7|  Weight: 11-6| J: C Gethings| T: A Ralph| OR:  92| CD
Front runner notched a third career success here this time last year, and though she wasn't quite in the same heart when third in a course handicap chase in October, she could go close if revitalised by a break.

Age: 6|  Weight: 11-6| J: Freddie Keighley(5)| T: Nick Scholfield| OR:  92
Yard has enjoyed an excellent rookie season, but this 6-y-o clearly isn't the easiest to win with, carrying his head a bit awkwardly when fourth of 6 at Market Rasen in March.

Playful Foxt92
Age: 4|  Weight: 11-4| J: Harry Skelton| T: D Skelton| OR:  96
Hails from a family his yard has had success with but having shown promise in junior hurdles, he never looked like justifying support on handicap bow at Catterick in late-January (reported to have made a respiratory noise). Clearly thought capable of better, though.

Portcammonp166
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-13| J: S Bowen| T: N P Mulholland| OR:  85
Looked to be building up to something when fourth in a C&D handicap last September but disappointed both starts subsequently. However, he needs a close look in the betting with Sean Bowen taking over.

Saccary35
Age: 7|  Weight: 10-8| J: Jack Tudor| T: D Pipe| OR:  80| BF
Fair Flat winner finished ahead of a subsequent winner when second at Huntington, and having backed that up when runner-up over C&D (soft) last time, he has to be on the shortlist.

Fortunate winner of juvenile hurdle at Wetherby in October for Sam England but has struggled since, including on stable debut at Stratford in late-March.

Forecasts

Westerton (9/2), Playful Fox (5/1), Saccary (6/1), Kalkaroo (13/2), Portcammon (10/1), Auntie Maggie (10/1), Diesel Line (12/1), Desert Halo (12/1), Ten Ten Twenty (14/1), Iolaos Du Mou (14/1), Spartan Times (14/1), Raffles Nobu (16/1), Crown Of India (25/1), Now Then Wendy (33/1), Genbu (50/1), Little Soiree (66/1)

Verdict

DESERT HALO still looks feasibly treated on the best of his hurdles form and he's taken to make it 2 wins from 3 starts in handicaps. Diesel Line has a fine record here and is entitled to go close, while Playful Fox disappointed on his latest start but is clearly thought capable of better. Saccary and Auntie Maggie both deserve a mention in a competitive event.
