Offered something to work on from his debut bumper and duly fulfilled that promise when winning 2nd time out at Ayr after a six-month break. Lot to like about his attitude and prevailed despite being weak in the market; something left to work on.

Given a considerate if far from dangerous introduction before being stepped up in class next time and only beating two home. Returned to a more realistic level last time but unsuited by the track (Musselburgh) when a beaten odds-on favourite.
Half-brother to a couple of Flat winners and would make some appeal on pedigree. Failed to show much on his debut in a C&D bumper racing off the pace and never getting involved; big improvement would be needed.

Bon Calvados

11/10
Half-brother to the high-class chaser Saint Calvados and two other winners who makes his debut here for a yard who have a 9-20 (45%) record in bumpers this season. Jockey travels North for his only ride of the day and must have a major chance.
Easy to back on his debut run (started 33-1) but showed something to work on for the future when taking a modest 3rd at Ayr; form yet to be franked. Given plenty to do there and looks as though a stiffer test will suit ideally.

Had made a fair debut back in April at Carlisle shaping better than his finishing position suggests and looking open to improvement. Matched that run after a 7-month break when taking 2nd over C&D recently on better ground; should be involved.

80/1
First bumper runner for the yard with one that is making his Rules debut having shown some ability in Irish point-to-points despite fading late on in those contests. There are winning jumpers in his pedigree and may outrun his odds.
Yard don't have many bumpers winners (2-56 in the last five years) and most of their runners in this sphere are best watched. This one is a half-brother to a fair hurdler (Ebony Rose) but on balance is best watched in this contest.

100/1
Rare bumper winner for a yard whose six wins in the last five years have all come over fences. He did shape a little better than the distance he was beaten on his debut and there may be some potential in him but most likely over further/obstacles.

There was very little to get excited about on his bumper debut at Kelso in May when he finished well beaten having been ridden with patience. Yard do have the odd bumper winner (4-32 last five years) but more needed to take this.

Cost £18,000 as a three-year-old; quite well related on the distaff side of the pedigree; dam a hurdles winner and a half-sister to three winners. Trainer 5-43 (12%) in bumpers last five years and has had a couple of debut winners; market useful.

Pedigree is a modest one and the yard are 0-5 in bumpers this year although they are a passable 5-67 in this sphere in the last five. She showed very little on her debut though and hard to see her getting involved here.

250/1
Far too green to show anything on her bumper debut at Hexham when she was soon off the bridle and raced towards the rear. Returns from a break but this company looks too warm for her.
14
Horse silk
125/1
Bumper debutante who is half-sister to a couple of winners out of a lightly-raced bumper dam. Trainer has seen her horses running with credit of late but is 1-25 in this sphere over the last five years and 0-8 with those making their debut.

Forecasts

Bon Calvados (11/10), Bally Conor (11/4), All Hail Caesar (6/1), Just Call Me Al (15/2), Corrieben Reiver (20/1), Trooper Turnbull (20/1), The Boo Box (40/1), My Son John (50/1), Metro Boulot Dodo (80/1), Real Armani (100/1), Darcey's Penny (100/1), Western Supernova (125/1), Beauty Dragon (250/1), Dorothy's Flame (250/1)

Verdict

As usual with bumpers a rather mixed bag in terms of ability and pedigree with the most interesting candidate on pedigree being BON CALVADOS who makes his debut for a yard who are flying in this sphere this season with Gavin Sheehan coming North for just one ride. In terms of form the only penalised runner Bally Conor is the one that sets the standard having built on his debut promise at Ayr last time showing a very professional attitude. Others to consider who have experience are All Hail Caesar, Just Call Me Al and Corrieben River. Both Trooper Turnbull and Metro Boulot Dodo are worth watching in the market.
  1. Bon Calvados
  2. Bally Conor
  3. All Hail Caesar
