Rejuvenated for the switch to Iain Jardine over the summer months, but has climbed the weights as a result. Tried over fences again on his second start for this stable at Hexham last month, but quickly reverts to hurdles after a poor show.
A ½L winner on handicap debut at Doncaster in March (2m good to soft), and that represented improved form. Beaten twice from higher marks since, but this trainer's stock have made a pleasing start to the new campaign overall.
Hasn't had all that many starts over hurdles and has been dropped 9lb since being allocated a handicap mark. Seems to go well with cut, but was beaten 23+L when fourth to Golden Jeffrey at Perth last month (2m heavy).
Ballyarthur Point-to-Point winner (April 2015) who made a reasonable start for new connections (€32,000) in late 2015. Not disgraced when fourth and clearly needing the race at Kelso last month and improvement is most likely on handicap debut.
Lightly raced over the past twelve months, and remains 4lb above his last winning mark at Kelso in April 2016 (2m soft). On the up at that point, but quieter last term and needs a career best on return from his current mark.
Made a winning debut over fences at Perth last month (2m heavy), beating Well Above Par by 3L. Therefore, a shade surprising to see him back over the smaller obstacles, but much respected on past efforts nevertheless.
Better known as a chaser, and one that often travels well but fails to deliver the goods for that matter. That said, he is a five time winner from 44 career starts, but this is probably a pipe-opener for fences.
C&D winner in May 2015 from a mark of 110 (good to soft), and also a runner up off 109 here in February 2017 (beaten a neck by Lord Ballim), so handicapped to go close if stronger for his Sedgefield reappearance.
Made little impression in three starts over fences for Noel Williams, and hasn't shown much enthusiasm since going back over hurdles in a couple of starts for this trainer. Falling sharply in the weights. (12lb since stable switch).
Won just once in 16 career starts (at Hexham in June 2016; 2m soft). However, he's consistent from this kind of mark, regularly making the frame, and he's difficult to knock given that he is brave and races with just one eye.
A mare who knows how to win races, and was solid over a variety of trips last winter (mainly 2m4f to 3m). 5lb higher than when successful at Market Rasen in March (beat Miss Mash by 1L), and might be one for fences soon.
Off since April 2016, and no longer in the care of Ian Duncan, but impossible to fancy on his rules form over obstacles (1 from 25).
Hexham specialist, with all three of her career successes coming in Northumberland. Front runner who had previously appeared vulnerable over 2m4f, but proved her stamina by beating Soiesauvage by 2¼L latest. Trip ideal, but 6lb higher today.
Forecasts
Barrys Jack (2/1), Wazowski (5/1), Celtic Flames (7/1), Flemerina (8/1), Hartside (11/1), Jokers And Rogues (11/1), Trongate (12/1), Vercingetorix (22/1), Monfass (22/1), Mrs Grass (25/1), Trust Thomas (33/1), Bingo D'Olivate (50/1), Why But Why (200/1)
A trappy opener to the new National Hunt season at Carlisle, but a race which promises to offer a decent priced reward should we solve the puzzle. The early signs are that Rose Dobbin has her stock in good order, so Doncaster winner Monfass is worthy of consideration despite being higher in the weights now whilst handicap debutant Celtic Flames almost certainly needed his return from a lengthy absence at Kelso last month, and should show more at a more suitable level. However, the pair to concentrate upon are Barry's Jack and HARTSIDE. The former makes a surprise switch back to the smaller obstacles after a debut success over fences at Perth last month, but remains fairly solid overall, yet it is the Peter Winks trained charge that is the selection. He goes well over C&D, and is undeniably well treated, and the expectation is that his recent Sedgefield reappearance (which needs improving upon) should stand him in good stead for this winnable contest.
- Hartside
- Barrys Jack
