Now 10lb higher than when winning at Wolverhampton three starts back in December, but has remained in good form since. Went under by half a length in a driving finish over C&D to Erissimus Maximus last month before justifying odds on favoritsim in a three runner contest back at Dunstall Park. This is clearly his trip, and owned by a prominent and regular race sponsor (Vertem) at Newcastle.
Likes to race prominently, and made all to score over this C&D late last month from an 8lb lower mark, comfortably beating Erissimus Maximus by two and a quarter lengths (fourth Lady Cristal has won since). This is only his third AW start, and very much on the upgrade with his stable in flying form.
Remains a maiden after five career starts, with his best effort (although not his best placing) perhaps coming over 6f at this track in November when third to Holmeswood. Drops sharply back to 5f having tried 7f in handicap company the last twice (behind recent Newcastle scorer Alkashaaf in both those races). Dropped a couple of pounds to a mark of 74.
Ran out a shock 33/1 winner on debut in a maiden fillies event (5f) at Beverley in August, but has taken a clear backward step the last twice when beating just a sole rival home in two subsequent starts. Not seen since October, and needs to bounce back from that no show over this same C&D.
£48,000 two-year-old, who left three inauspicious runs in maidens well behind when returning from a four month absence to take a 5f Fibresand handicap (debut) at Southwell last month. In beating White Royale (form tied up with Cajmere), he proved his well-being with Luke Morris taking over from Joe Fanning today, seeking to follow up from a 3lb higher mark.
Forecasts
Major Jumbo (8/11), Wild Approach (9/2), Atteq (9/2), Cajmere (6/1), Bay Station (50/1)
MAJOR JUMBO remains firmly on the upgrade, and is taken to make all and defy an 8lb rise for his recent C&D success, with the stable of Kevin Ryan in flying form at this track of late. The improving Wild Approach looks the likeliest danger on paper, with any sprinter from the yard of Robert Cowell worthy of close inspection, but he needs to prove himself to be equally adept on Tapeta despite a fair looking 3lb rise for his Southwell handicap debut success.
1. Major Jumbo
2. Wild Approach
3. Cajmere
