Useful over hurdles, but has proved a revelation over fences so far, progressing on all three starts and was desperately unlucky not to win the Grade 1 Kauto Star at Kempton on his latest start, when he was well clear when falling at the last. The horse he would have beaten (Royal Vacation) has franked the form in no uncertain terms since, and he appears to face a simple task here, despite soft ground being far from ideal.
Not a bad piece of form when third to Cheltenham Festival winner Mall Dini in an Irish point-to-point back in 2015, but only seen twice since and showed little when running at Lingfield in January, his first start for 13 months. No realistic chance of winning without mishap to the other two, and a safe completion for third looks the limit of his ambitions here.
Very useful over hurdles and it's not a year since he took a Listed race at Huntingdon, beating the future Greatwood Hurdle winner North Hill Harvey in the process, but his technique since going over fences has left plenty to be desired, often jumping stickily. Ran on well enough to grab fourth behind Querry Horse here last time (first time cheekpieces, retained today) but never looked the winner at any stage, and faces another tough task against Might Bite today.
Forecasts
Might Bite (1/7), Ma du Fou (9/2), Gorran Haven (66/1)
If there's any justice then MIGHT BITE will win this easily before going on and tackling bigger and better targets. So unlucky at Kempton when, with the race at his mercy he fell at the last, he faces a relatively straightforward task in beating his two rivals here. Ma Du Fou needs to improve his jumping technique but he's still easily second best, with Gorran Haven looking to complete for the diesel money.
1. Might Bite
2. Ma du Fou
3. Gorran Haven
