Dermot Weld to saddle Tarnawa in Breeders' Cup Turf

Dermot Weld believes that Tarnawa has 'unquestionably' the best chance of providing him with a winner at the Breeders' Cup next week.

One of Ireland's most successful trainers, Weld is the only European trainer to have saddled a winner of an American Triple Crown race and became the first to win the Melbourne Cup but success at the Breeders' Cup has eluded him.

The veteran handler is hopeful that Tarnawa could be the one to fill the gap on his CV.

"It would be lovely to win one of the races," he said.

"I've had very few horses with a serious chance (of winning at the Breeders' Cup) that I believe she has of winning."

When asked during a Zoom media Breeders’ Cup preview call if she represented his best chance to date the reply was to the point and succinct.

"Unquestionably," came the answer.

Tarnawa has options in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf - which is run over a mile and about a furlong and a half at Keeneland - and her first preference of the Breeders' Cup Turf, a race won in recent years by Found and Enable.

The latter contest is over a mile and a half and Weld confirmed the race as her intended target due to the nature of the track and influence of the draw.

"She'll go for the Breeders' Cup Turf," he said. "The track has a very short straight and the draw is vital in that race (Fillies and Mares). She's equally effective over 10 furlongs or a mile and a half.

"She's very sound, a very tough filly, very genuine and a stayer with speed."

Tarnawa made her seasonal reappearance in August, beating Breeders' Cup bound Cayenne Pepper at Cork, before winning a brace of Group Ones in France.

The Shamardal filly took the Prix Vermeille in September and the Prix de l'Opera at the Arc meeting earlier this month, delighting her trainer in the process.

"Very pleased with her, we purposefully planned an autumn campaign for her. She won the Vermeille nicely and won the Opera - both Group One wins.

"We just keep doing the same training schedule. She's a very straightforward filly. She worked last week and I was delighted with the way she went.

"Christophe Soumillon will definitely ride her. I thought he gave her two perfect rides when she won her two Group Ones and don't break a winning combination."

Everything is in place for a big run and Weld is now just hoping that fortune favours his filly as she goes on her travels once again.

"Very happy with the filly, please God, we just want a little bit of luck in her travelling and in the race and I think she could represent us very well," he concluded.

Tarnawa is 3/1 with Sky Bet, and Paddy Power for the Breeders' Cup Turf.
