Best Bet: Jackamundo 3:10 Nottingham

I’m a fan of Declan Carroll when the going turns soft and the Malton handler is a very good placer of modest handicappers, as the record books will testify. Backing his handicappers blind over the past five years would have yielded a profit of £677.90 at SP for stakes of a tenner, but his strike-rate improves further when the ground turns testing, and recent deluges have seen his yard amongst the winners with the likes of Motahassen and Musharrif popping up in recent days at rewarding odds.

Carroll has Jackamundo entered in the MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap, and he looks a fair bet against a favourite who is as under priced as he is unexposed. Jackamundo won twice off the reel over this trip last summer on testing ground, with his first win coming off this mark and over C&D before following up in the mud at Haydock. That quickfire double saw him go up 11lb in the handicap, and he struggled thereafter, albeit tackling trips in excess of his optimum on occasions.

As expected, Jackamundo has returned to form as his mark has dropped and he signalled his turn was at hand when third to handicap blot Vulcan at Haydock last time. The winner scored by seven lengths, but he was beaten just a head for second in what had looked a competitive race, and he’s worth treating as back to form.

The softer ground will help him and his trainer has a remarkably good record in C&D handicaps, saddling six winners from 26 runners since 2015. That figure improves to three from four on soft ground, although caveats about small samples obviously apply.

The possible fly in the ointment is the fitting of blinkers but they could easily be a bonus, as Jackamundo has been a little slow to jump in recent starts and the headgear should help him concentrate at the off. In addition this race has no obvious pace angle and I’d prefer to see Jackamundo go on from his inside stall than sit behind horses in the same position.

Each-Way Double:

Espresso Freddo 1:00 & Motahassen 4:15 Nottingham

With plenty of firms offering extra places, there is value to be had in betting each-way doubles, as with overbroke place books, punters are multiplying value in the same way the firms do when enticing punters to bet multiples on overround win books. The key is to maximise the value in the place market, and treat the win double as something of a bonus.

The ideal horse for such ventures is Espresso Freddo, who has a modest strike-rate, but is very effective at a mile when conditions are testing and his record over the past two years in such conditions is a remarkably consistent 31222. He’s only won three from 36 in handicaps and is fully exposed, so will be a decent price in the win market, but his chances of being placed on the back of a back-to form second at Hamilton last time are much better than the corresponding place odds.

Motahassen is another Declan Carroll runner who arrives in form after a win at Redcar on Saturday and now has a record for his stable on soft or heavy ground at trips short of 1m5f which reads 14131. He’s drawn very wide in the finale but he’s the only obvious front runner of those drawn in double figures and that should enable him to cross over fairly comfortably.

He’s an attractive bet as recent Chelmsford winner Stone Mason takes a big chunk out of the market, and while he may have finally clicked for The Horse Watchers, his previous turf form is not good enough to make the frame, let alone win this contest. The place double pays 8/1 at current odds, but you may get better, while Stone Mason is also an appealing lay at around 2/1 for those who prefer that approach.

Vulnerable Favourite:

Lay Darling Maltaix 4:30 Ludlow – maximum price 6.0

The Paul Nicholls-trained Darling Maltaix has been put in as favourite in some lists for the 40 Free Jumpers To Follow @tipstersempire.co.uk Novices' Limited Handicap Chase and it’s true that he arrives in good form after a win at Stratford and a rallying second at Newton Abbot. As a result, though, he’s higher in the weights than ideal and his overall record suggests he’s unlikely to find any further improvement after 24 career starts.

More worryingly, his strike-rate, bearing in mind how well Paul Nicholls places his horses, is a poor one and he has won just once in 16 starts going right-handed. I’m not sure whether course orientation is that much of an issue, as he was the only one to put in a clean round of jumping when winning at Stratford, and would surely have been second best but for Seddon to blunder badly when about to take control three fences out.

He ran well on paper last time but again only a couple ran any sort of race and winner Senior Citizen idled badly after getting to the front easily. Darling Maltaix faces much more depth here and will not be able to dominate, making the initial 7/2 about him on Tuesday evening unattractive. Lay him win or place according to preference, while if that’s not your bag, then you might consider backing Kerry Lee’s chasing newcomer Demachine to modest stakes.

He's unexposed and is built to do better over fences while the yard had a winner after a lengthy break at Uttoxeter on Sunday. There is, after all, more than one way to skin a cat.
