View from France: Jason Kiely previews Sunday's Chantilly action

There's a strong travelling contingent in France today but Jason Kiely reckons big home hope Persian King is set to rule the roost.

The recent domination of UK and Irish trained runners in French Group Ones threatens to continue at Chantilly this afternoon where the Prix d’Ispahan is the feature on a nine-race card.

Five of the eight declared runners for the Ispahan come from the UK but the home team are represented by the red-hot favourite in a quality renewal of the race.

King can regain Group One crown

Trainer Andre Fabre has insisted that since Persian King’s return from injury the Prix d’Ispahan (15.25) has always been the main objective for the colt and he has been trained to peak for this afternoon's feature.

A comeback run in early June saw Persian King defeated by stablemate Magny Cours over a mile although it was openly documented that the colt was only 80% fit and that it was a race to initially see where he was in terms of well-being. The four-year-old then went on to take a Group Two at Saint-Cloud 18 days later where he looked a new animal, travelling strongly and accelerating powerfully going on to win with a bit in hand. Both Fabre and Persian King’s jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot have stated that he should be in peak physical condition for the Ispahan and with the ground conditions looking ideal, Persian King could claim a second top-class title.

The son of Kingman was an incredibly high achiever through his early career and displayed an exuberant turn of foot to land the 2019 French Guineas at ParisLongchamp, defeating one of today’s rivals Shaman by a length. With that win notching up a five-timer Persian King was subsequently defeated in the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) where he went down a fighting second to multiple Group One winner Sottsass. An injury obtained in the Jockey Club prevented the colt (who is owned in partnership between Ballymore Thoroughbreds and Godolphin) from continuing his three-year-old campaign and Persian King could still be on the progressive curve.

The atypical one mile, one furlong distance of today's race could be a huge advantage to Persian King, who according to connections didn’t see out the trip in the French Derby.

With Shaman sure to set a decent pace up front this afternoon, Boudot should be able to get a lead into the race before attacking inside the final few hundred yards.

Of the remaining runners in the race, Roseman could pose the biggest threat to Persian King. Coming from the same connections who took this race last term with Zabeel Prince, the Roger Varian-trained colt put up a valiant effort in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, finishing fourth having missed the break on his seasonal bow.

The son of Kingman already has the beating of Century Dream, who re-opposes here, and it would be no surprise if this race was on the radar for Roseman since the beginning of the year, although the drying ground may just go against him.

Jet to take off in Papin

This race has gone to an English-trained runner for the last six years therefore it is no surprise to see The Lir Jet as odds-on favourite for today's Darley Prix Robert Papin (13.35).

The Group Two contest for two-year-olds generally attracts a select field and this year's is no exception as only four juveniles line up for €90,000 event.

Trained by Michael Bell, The Lir Jet looked to ooze speed when taking the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, bringing his lifetime tally to two from two.

Donning the colours of Qatar Racing the son of Prince Of Lir travelled with supreme ease before going on to pounce on long-time leader Golden Pal close home, with the pair pulling three lengths clear of the remaining ten runners.

Today sees the colt step up to six furlongs for the first time but with only four runners in the field that shouldn’t be too much of an issue and jockey Oisin Murphy should have no problem taking the Group Two contest.

Axdavali has shown plenty of class in three career starts and travelled like the winner for a long way in the Group Three Prix du Bois at ParisLongchamp two weeks ago before just missing out at the finish to the talented Livachop. The Yann Barbarot colt could pose the biggest threat to The Lir Jet and should take the €19,800 allocation for second place, at least.

Important day for talented Trullier

Having ridden 51 winners during the 2019 season teenager Thomas Trullier quickly became a name to watch out for amongst the upcoming jockeys but like so many gone before him, he has struggled to keep the momentum flowing once losing his claim.

Today the young rider has been gifted a huge chance by his mentor and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning trainer Nicolas Clement to prove his worth. Trullier rides the yard’s two runners in today's Listed races due to the suspension of Clement number one Stephane Pasquier, and both have strong each-way chances with the Clement yard in red-hot form currently.

Beaute Pour Toi (14.50) has been placed twice at this level and put up a satisfactory effort when finishing third behind Simeen at Saint-Cloud three weeks ago. Being drawn in stall one it would be no surprise to see her ridden quite close to the pace by Trullier as she generally sees the mile out strongly and could should have an excellent chance in this wide-open event.

No Tinc Por (16.00) was extremely unlucky not to take a Listed race on her seasonal return at Lion d’Angers last month. The classy filly was trapped four wide throughout the race and surrendered numerous lengths to the field. A strong drive from Trullier produced a fine effort in the home straight by the filly who went down by a head at the line and today's extended distance is sure to be a huge benefit.
