Heartache was a short-priced favourite to follow up last month's impressive victory in the Queen Mary Stakes for Clive Cox, with Gerald Mosse taking over in the saddle from Adam Kirby.
However, Clive Cox's filly received a bump coming out of the stalls from the Richard Hannon-trained De Bruyne Horse and although she regained her composure to throw down a strong challenge in the final furlong, she ultimately came up short.
Unfortunately, trained by Karl Burke and ridden by Tony Piccone, had finished a close second on his two most recent starts and sported a visor for the first time in this five-and-a-half-furlong Group Two.
The son of Society Rock tracked Tom Dascombe's front-runner Frozen Angel into the race before picking up well to get on top close home.
Frozen Angel, fourth in the Norfolk Stakes at the Royal meeting, ran a fine race to hold onto the runner-up spot from Heartache.
High Dream Milena fared best of the home team in fourth and may have finished closer but for being slightly impeded in his run by Unfortunately.
De Bruyne Horse passed the post last of the six runners.
The stewards looked into the interference between Unfortunately and High Dream Milena, but the placings remained unaltered.
Burke said: "I'm relieved we kept the race in the stewards' room. I'm not sure we would have done if the French horse had finished second.
"It's a great result and I'm delighted for everybody. We had a bit of a sticky six months of the year, but the horses are coming to themselves now and running well.
"If he'd finished third or fourth I'd have been satisfied, but I'm not surprised he's run so well. He's a horse with a lot of ability.
"Tony Piccone gave him a very good ride and I think the visor has helped a fair bit."
The Leyburn-based trainer is in no rush to commit to future targets, but hinted a return to France could be on the cards.
"I hadn't really thought beyond today. The Richmond at Goodwood comes soon enough and he'd need soft ground on an undulating track like that," Burke added.
"We'll have to consider the Prix Morny. A flat track like Deauville will suit him and six furlongs shouldn't be a problem judged on the way he finished today.
"There's also the Gimcrack at York, so we'll see what happens.
"We'll try to turn him into a little stallion."
