Race Report
Tupi won the first race of the 2017 British Flat turf season with an authoritative success in the Betway Cammidge Trophy at Doncaster.
The 7/1 chance pulled away from the field inside the final furlong to win by four lengths under Ryan Moore for Richard Hannon.
The five-year-old had run well on his last start in Meydan and with race fitness on his side he ran out a comfortable winner.
Ed Walker's Captain Colby edged out Pipers Note for the minor placings, with the gambled-on Blue Bayou, backed into 8/1 from 25s on Friday, was a commendable fourth.
Reaction
Ryan Moore: "He was very impressive and he looked magnificent. The ground isn't too bad and that helped him. He had the best form going into the race."
Richard Hannon: "It's been quite a long time since he last won a race, but he's got loads of ability. We nearly sold him a couple of times as we almost lost faith in him, but you've seen how good he is there. When he started going good, Ryan held on to him a little bit. We've been to Dubai and Qatar and those places so it's nice to see him win."
"He won two Listed races as a three-year-old but we've messed about with his trip. This time last year Ryan said he was a six-furlong horse but he's been running over seven and a mile. We'll look at the Duke of York now, and he might have an entry in the Abernant (Newmarket). He does pick his days, though, and he can throw in the odd shocker."
Ed Walker: "That was a very good comeback run. It was a very competitive Listed race and if you take out the runaway winner he's beaten the rest. I'd love to run him in the Wokingham (Royal Ascot). I think a stiff six furlongs off a strong pace is exactly what he wants. He might just be high enough in the weights to get in now."
