John Gosden has ruled long-time antepost favourite Too Darn Hot out of the Qipco 2000 Guineas with the Irish version or the Dante Stakes at York now on the agenda.
The star two-year-old was hot favourite for the first Classic of the season on the back of a superb juvenile campaign that culminated in Dewhurst glory last October.
A warm order throughout the winter, he was ruled out of his intended prep, last Satutday's Greenham, due to a splint problem and has been uneasy in the antepost market ever since.
Gosden told the Racing Post: "Although he's shown great improvement in the last nine days, Too Darn Hot will not be ready in time to run in the 2,000 Guineas.
"It's unfortunate but it's only two weeks away and that does not allow us sufficient time to get the required work into him.
"Consequently he'll miss Newmarket. The two races we have in mind now are both next month, the Dante Stakes at York and the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh."
