ON THIS DAY IN SPORT
1988: David Llewellyn shot a final round of 65 in the AGF Biarritz Open to record a then European Tour record low for 72 holes. His total of 258 beat the previous best of 259, set by Mark McNulty a year earlier.
1993: The Grand National was declared void for the first and only time. After a second false start, the organisers were unable to call the horses back. Several of them completed the course and first over the line in the "Grand National that wasn't" was Esha Ness, ridden by John White and trained by Jenny Pitman.
1999: Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler celebrated scoring a penalty against Everton by appearing to simulate sniffing cocaine along the six-yard line. His action led to a Football Association fine and suspension.
2000: London was confirmed as the host city for the 2005 IAAF World Athletics Championships. However, London was later forced to withdraw when the British Government shelved plans to build a new stadium at Pickett's Lock in October 2001. Helsinki in Finland was eventually chosen as the host city.
2009: Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor were banned from ever representing Scotland again by the Scottish Football Association following their involvement in a drinking session. However, following George Burley's departure as manager, his successor Craig Levein said all players will be considered for selection, opening the door once more to Ferguson and McGregor.
2010: Cambridge won the 156th University Boat Race, tasting victory on the Tideway for the first time since 2007.
2010: David Haye retained his WBA world heavyweight title after John Ruiz's corner threw in the towel in the ninth round of their fight in Manchester.
2012: St Helens announced Nathan Brown would become their new coach on a three-year deal at the end of the season when his contract at Huddersfield expired. Brown left the Saints after leading them to a 14-6 2014 Grand Final victory over Wigan and was succeeded by Keiron Cunningham.
2013: Rangers terminated the contract of striker Francisco Sandaza following an investigation into a hoax phone call.
2014: Seven players from Football League clubs in the north west of England were arrested in connection with alleged spot-fixing in matches and another six were rearrested over the claims. The case against the 13 footballers was later dropped due to insufficient evidence.
2016: England suffered last-over heartbreak in the final of the World Twenty20 as Carlos Brathwaite clubbed Ben Stokes for four successive sixes to seal an unforgettable West Indies win at Eden Gardens.
