Racing betting tips: Tuesday April 14
1pt win Lost Signal in the 14:25 Newmarket at 16/1 (General, min 12/1)
1pt win Crazee Icon in the 15:00 Newmarket at 9/2 (General, min 4/1)
0.5pts e.w Nitty Gritty in the 15:20 Market Rasen at 22/1 (Sky Bet - 1/5 1,2,3,4)
One notable change in the ownership ranks this season, I’ve only recently noticed, is that many of the horses running under the Yulong Investments banner of Yuesheng Zhang will now be running in the reversed silks (white with green check sleeves) of Forz Europe, the racing banner of Zhang’s son-in-law, Harris Li. Sadly, that band of racehorses won’t include the exciting Gewan, who was fatally injured in a racecourse gallop at Kempton, and hopefully Li’s bad luck won’t endure.
Sporting the Forz Europe silks in this conditions race, Lost Signal, looks overpriced given the improvement he’s likely to make as a three-year-old and he’s unexposed after winning the latter of two starts as a juvenile, when beating subsequent nursery winner Magnatura at Ffos Las. Well entered up last year, and confirmed at the 5-day stage for the Craven Stakes here, Lost Signal is almost certainly better than he’s been able to show to date and I’d not be keen to lay him at double-figure odds. He may be the lowest rated of the field on official figures, but his trainer doesn’t entertain geese as swans and could easily have put him in a handicap from what would be a very fair mark of 89, but the fact that he has higher aspirations needs to be factored into calculations. An extra furlong will suit already, but that’s a minor gripe and Lost Signal is one to keep on the right side in the opening weeks of the turf season proper.
I’m hopeful that Magnature can lead us to another winner here, as when Tom Ward’s gelding won his nursery at Goodwood in the autumn, he was chased home by Crazee Icon, and Andrew Balding’s filly was comfortably clear of the others. She looks the sort to keep progressing and her stable has already got 47 winners on board for the calendar year, so fitness is not expected to be an issue on her return, and she gave the impression on that nursery bow that she is well ahead of her mark if she can channel her energy efficiently.
Crazee Icon got rather lit up after a sluggish start at Goodwood and then ran into the back of other runners when launching her challenge, otherwise she would have given the winner plenty to think about. She needs to settle better now, but I’d be happy to put her exuberance last time down to nothing more than a lack of experience and she should have learnt enough to win here.
Nitty Gritty is a big price this morning and worth a small bet. He moved to Walford after being with Joseph O’Brien last summer, and his first three starts for the yard revealed next to nothing, but there was a bit of money kicking around for him at Wetherby last time and he duly ran a better race, travelling smoothly into contention but just lacking that final gear from two out to finish the job off. Nevertheless, a much improved effort and if he’s ready to go after a break, could go close.
