Richard Hannon's high hopes for Tigre du Terre

Richard Hannon has spoken in glowing terms about juvenile Tigre du Terre, who made a winning debut at Ascot last Friday, and could be bound for the Group Two Qatar Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on the opening day of their big meeting on Tuesday August 1.

While most eyes might have been on the action on the July Course at Newmarket, Tigre du Terre made a most accomplished bow in a seven-furlong novice contest, scoring by four and a half lengths under Martin Harley.

Speaking at a Goodwood media event on Monday, the son of Le Havre was picked out by Hannon as one of the most exciting members of his team at a meeting he likes to target.

"I know he was quite a big price, but I can promise you that we already knew he was quite decent," said the trainer.

"It was a funny day as we were struggling to get a jockey and we called up Martin Harley, who is a good lad, but he doesn't usually ride for us and I think people might have thought we didn't fancy him because of that, but I wasn't surprised, although there's no doubt that most of our two-year-olds have really come on for their first starts this season and I wasn't expecting him to win like that.

"He's come out of that well and we're looking at the Vintage which we won for the same owners (Middleham Park Racing) with Toormore in 2013.

"It's going to be much tougher but I think he's all right - he might just be a Guineas horse next year, but there's a way to go yet.

"Denaar has disappointed me twice now and it might be that he just isn't quite as good as I thought he was, but he just didn't seem to get home in the July Stakes and I think we'll drop him back to five for the Molecombe Stakes now and ride him like we stole him from the front.

"Oh This Is Us ran a really good race in the Queen Anne and he could go for the Sussex or join Kool Kompany in the Lennox - if Ribchester scares a few away from the Sussex, that could be the way to go.

"I'm not sure he was quite at his best in the Queen Anne as it came at the end of a busy spell for him and he has appreciated a break since."
