Richmond Stakes report and video replay: Supremacy rules for Clive Cox at Goodwood

Supremacy was far too quick and classy for his rivals in a one-sided Qatar Richmond Stakes at Goodwood on Thursday.

The son of Mehmas was stepping up in class after winning a Windsor maiden on his second start last time out, but he took it in his stride after dominating throughout.

Sent to the front by Adam Kirby as soon as the gates opened, he worked his way across to the stands' rail and showed pace to lead the field going down to halfway.

The form horse and favourite Yazaman was forced to race wide which didn't help his cause, but Supremacy just kept piling on the pressure up front and ran away from his rivals for a four-length success.

Yazaman did stay on best of all to ensure the runner-up spot.

It was a second successive win in the race for Clive Cox and Kirby, the pair winning last year's edition with Golden Horde.

Supremacy could take a similar route to that horse now for the rest of the season, with races like the Middle Park likely to be on the agenda.

"Coming into the race I really liked him as his maiden win was good," Kirby told Racing TV.

"I didn't go out with the intention of going out all guns blazing and grabbing the rail, it just worked out like that, but it helped.

"Supremacy likes this quicker ground."

Cox was delighted with the win and is already thinking about his three-year-old campaign, with the Commonwealth Cup a possible long-term target.

"Coming here and winning the Richmond two years running is pretty special," Cox said.

"One of the comments Adam's just made was 'he's not just for this year'.

"He put it to bed when he changed gear and it was very impressive, in a pretty quick time by the sounds of it."
