Sixties Song camp living Ascot dream ahead of King George

Connections of Argentinian hope Sixties Song have described his participation in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday as "like a dream coming true".

The four-year-old, who arrived in Newmarket on Sunday, will break new ground in the Group One when becoming the first South American-trained runner to compete in Britain.

Although turned over at short odds on his most recent start in May, the Alfredo Gaitan Dassie-trained son of Sixties Icon had previously claimed top-level victories in Chile and his native Argentina.

Nico Gaitan Dassie, assistant to his father, said: "We are really proud of our horse. This is tough, but a really nice challenge for all of us. It is the first time a South American-trained horse has run at Ascot and we are delighted to be here.

"If you compared this to football it would be like a guy who plays in an average team in Argentina and goes straight to play in the final of the Champions League. This is like a dream coming true.

"We decided to come here after winning the Latinoamericano in Chile. After the horse won the Carlos Pellegrini last December it was in our minds to run in the King George.

"It is a tough experience. We are here as we know that we have a good horse."

Despite Sixties Song, who is a 66/1 shot with Sky Bet for the mile-and-a-half showpiece, never having raced right-handed in his eight career starts Gaitan Dassie junior believes that will not be an inconvenience.

He said: "He has never run right-handed, but after coming back to Argentina from Chile and after we decided to come here we moved the horse from San Isidro to Palermo racecourse.

"Palermo gives us the opportunity to train the horse right-handed early in the mornings. The horse is very professional and smart and has done pretty well training for this race. He is healthy and in a good mood and now we are ready for the race."

He added: "We are proud of him and I think he can do a great job. It's a long way to come, but hopefully it will be worth it."
