Saturday's guide to ITV's Pick 7

Dave Smith takes a look at Saturday's ITV action. He makes GROWL his best bet of the day.

13:50 Goodwood

The consolation race for the Stewards' Cup throws up 23 runners so finding the winner may be a bit of a puzzle. We start with Golden Steps who won this in 2015 and has shown up well in two runs recently over an inadequate trip for Jim Goldie. All of the horse's wins have come over further and this return to 6f should see him at his best. Ryan Moore has been booked for Boy In The Bar and he races off a good mark with excuses for his last run. He's 5lb below his last winning mark on turf and that win was over the course and distance at Goodwood. The race he won was of a similar standard and that should stand him in good stead for this race. Paul Midgley does well with his horses and RELATED is another worthy of note. He was second in this race in 2016 and although he was far from at his best last time out at Epsom that track doesn't suit all horses. His previous run at Doncaster was very encouraging and Joe Fanning is a positive booking. Though Militia has run well in three runs in the frame this season he will find this tougher. It's two steps up in class and though he's thoroughly unexposed and well drawn this may be a step too far. Classic Seniority is dangerous off this mark and is well berthed from stall eight. He is 3lb below his best winning form and that makes him a live contender.

It could be argued that MELODIC MOTION was hampered when getting into contention last time out and she's better than the bare result suggested. She's a former course and distance winner here who's 1lb well in at least on all rivals. She hasn't regained the form of last season but there were positives to take out of the last run and another chance is taken on her here. Highgarden gets the three-year-old weight allowance and she should be bang in the mix after a promising second in a similar race two weeks ago. Frankie takes the ride and that's obviously a plus and he meets Alwaysandforever again here after beating last time out. There's plenty of scope for improvement knowing that she handles HQ. Crimson Rosette has gone up 22lb in the handicap since April and that rapid rise has seen her now pitched into this Listed race. She always gives her running and is a solid each-way bet.

14:25 Goodwood

Platitude makes a lot of interest in the Summer Stakes over 1m6f with 14 runners taking their chance. He's won twice over this track and trip and he's been in good form this season for Amanda Perrett. He's never won off this mark but he's only 1lb higher than his best form which makes him a strong shout for an each-way bet. SIR CHAUVELIN has suffered from a combination of tough assignment and poor race riding in his last two starts and at 12/1 with Robert Winston booked this seems a better chance. The draw shouldn't inconvenience him and only his mark is a slight concern but there's still hope for improvement based on his finishing bursts at York and Newmarket. Pacify hasn't been tried over this trip but he looks ready for it on the basis of his last two starts. He's 5lb above his best form but the step up in trip could negate that. Melting Dew makes huge appeal however with Alfarris franking the form at the track on Tuesday. Ryan Moore takes the ride with the only concern being the unknown regarding the trip. There's nothing huge in the breeding which suggests he is more of a stayer and his best runs have been over 1m2f. At 4/1 he is too short with that question mark. Walton Street comes here for a bang in-form stable and whilst he's another one with an unknown hanging over him with regard to the trip, there's stamina on the dam side and that makes him more appealing than Melting Dew.

Mark Johnston's pursuit to become the winning-ost trainer in British racing continues apace here and he brings Prairie Spy to the course. The horse was turned over in a Catterick nursery last time out but this is still early and can make a bold bid here. His opening mark is fair as clearly the handicapper has put a line through his run at the Yorkshire track. Quiet Waters has won two from two but they were much poorer contests than this. The Super Sprint wasn't the best renewal 2 weeks ago but COOKUPASTORM gains an opening mark of 76 and ran well in fifth in that race. He looked to be outpaced at times and a step up to 6f might just show him in an even better light. He's up against Ginger Nut again here and there's every chance that, like the selection, he too is on a handy mark for this step up in distance. As shown by Burnt Sugar recently a lenient handicap mark after a big success can pay dividends. Thriving gets a high opening mark for facile successes and though he won with a lot in hand at Chepstow, this is harder.

15:00 Goodwood

A poor turnout for this Group 3 sees only four competitors try to take some black type. DEE EX BEE will go off favourite, more than likely on the basis of his second in the Derby in June. His last two runs have been a little disappointing and that tempers enthusiasm about backing the horse at 5/4; yet this is the ITV7 and we only want the winner. Cross Counter is 8lb inferior on the BHA ratings and that may not be reflected in the price at 5/2. However, he's lightly raced, recently gelded and is open to improvement but this may be too tough. Sun Maiden's impressive maiden win marked him down as one to follow and he certainly showed that he's a good horse when third in the Ribblesdale. Ryan Moore takes the ride and there could be plenty to come from this son of Frankel. Bombyx would need a huge improvement to win this and that seems unlikely given the opposition.

15:15 Newmarket

The market will be a clear indicator as a number of these haven't run. POSTED is one who has run when shaping nicely behind subsequent disappointment Scintillating at Newbury last time out. That form hasn't worked out but the winner was chucked into the deep end and there'll be plenty of races for her. It's hard to know what to make of New Jazz's form as none of the other runners have been turned out again but she ran well and there should be more to come for a stable at the top of the Trainer's championship. Dubai Duty is well bred by Frankel from a Street Cry mare but it is hard to gain an idea without any stable information so she's not advised for win purposes.

15:40 Goodwood

Another huge field and plenty of luck required in the Stewards' Cup over 6f. GROWL has historically run very well in this race when coming fourth in the last two runnings and he's 10lb below that mark now and very dangerous. He was never nearer fourth last time out at York and has been dropped 1lb for that performance. Gunmental has improved this season with a notable performance at The Curragh last time out following good wins at both York and Newmarket. He's up 10lb since that performance at the Yorkshire track though and that is a slight network. Pettochside would be dangerous off the best of his old form but he's nine now and he may be at the mercy of his some younger performers as would Watchable. Poyle Vinnie has run a string of good races in valuable handicaps without quite looking like winning. He's a massive price in this and with some firms paying six places it may be worth having a look at an each-way shout away from the ITV7. Spring Loaded looks too high in the handicap and potentially running over the wrong trip with all his best form coming over 5f. Any rain would be a benefit to Lancelot Du Lac and he was a winner of this race in 2017. Yet it's forecast for firmer ground and that doesn't bode well for Dean Ivory's eight-year-old. George Bowen's having a fine season over this trip but he stopped short in the Wokingham and he's 6lb up for his victory over Classic Seniority at Hamilton. This will require some luck in running and hopefully Growl from stall 10 can get that.
