FOOTBALL

George Pitts - Premier League

Pep Guardiola's side scored a league-high 95 goals last term and 12 of them came in the opening 10 minutes of games - the next best in this period were Liverpool, Man United, Tottenham and Arsenal with six.

Quick-starting City scored after just 12 minutes in the Community Shield against Liverpool last week and at around 4/1 it is worth a small play on them bagging early on here.

With VAR coming into play in the top flight this weekend, we could see a rise in penalties and this looks like a good opportunity to capitalise. With the speed and good footwork in both attacks, a rash challenge could well see a spot-kick awarded.

Spurs are good at drawing in fouls - Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Walker-Peters and Lucas Moura all attracted more than one per game last season - and you would expect them to soon pass last season's total tally of just four league penalties. The odds make it too good to pass up here as Chris Kavanagh, who awarded a penalty in his last Premier League outing, takes charge.

A point of interest from Leeds' win in Bristol last weekend, and indeed throughout the pre-season campaign, is the more advanced role that Forshaw has been allowed to take up.

Leeds netted three in that game, and there will be a greater emphasis on attack as they look to begin their home campaign in the best possible fashion.

Forshaw posted three shots last time out, one of which was inches wide, and with Kalvin Phillips allowed to play the deeper role in midfield, expect Forshaw to have more opportunities to strike.

Ryan Lowe expressed his desire to bring his attacking brand of football to the Pilgrims this season and, based on what we saw last week, it's clearly taken little time for the players to adjust.

In front of their own supporters, Lowe will expect more of the same. That victory at Crewe is made more impressive by the fact that they are still on the lookout for a replacement for striker Freddie Ladapo.

We are backing Bristol City to earn their first win of the season after a good week of recruitment. Birmingham won last weekend but only had one shot and were hammered in midweek in the Carabao Cup.

Millwall are still finding their feet with their new squad and were weak away from home last term, while WBA, boosted by their victory over Forest and the additions of Charlie Austin and Matheus Pereira, will be looking to make a good impression in front of their fans.

Gillingham defeated Burton twice last season. Nigel Clough's side have only won one of their last five Sky Bet League One matches.

Blackpool have their feel good factor back with new owners and Simon Grayson returning as manager and won their opening match. Southend lost to homeless Coventry, and have won just four times in 2019, with two of those back in January.

It's been 414 days since we last saw him in action – that he’s been kept in training as a five-year-old gelding is arguably another significant pointer – when not at all disgraced in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot 2018.

That was only his third public appearance for Charlie Appleby, as the son of Nathaniel came back in 2018 with two highly encouraging efforts in Dubai, when fourth to Gold Star and second to Walton Street (reversing Gold Star form in the process) – two other representatives for the boys in blue.

So it’s fair to say they know where they stand in terms of this horse’s natural ability and overall levels of form, and it’s also reasonable to suggest that Appleby hasn’t quite had a fair crack of the whip with him yet.

So here is he, back after considerable time away, dropping to a mile and a quarter and with the now-recovered William Buick in the saddle for the first time in his life.

I've ridden with Filip a bit and he's been champion jockey in Germany several times. He's very neat and compact and he's also done well during his stints in Japan. I'm quite keen on some of his chances on Saturday, including Stone Of Destiny in the very first race, so he's worth a small bet to take the Silver Saddle, with Jamie Spencer looking his biggest danger.

Andrew Balding has often done well at the Shergar Cup meeting and the improving Never Do Nothing should go close in the Classic.

Another strong gallop looks likely here and, having won at Goodwood previously, the son of Casamento was keeping on well over this course and distance last month when third behind Floating Artist and the promising Faylaq.

The experienced Australian rider Mark Zahra gets the leg up on this genuine type who appears to be making steady progress.

Cricket fans in England will know plenty about the skills of Babar Azam following his fine performances on these shores already this summer. Babar warmed up for the World Cup by stroking a brilliant hundred and two half-centuries against England earlier in the year before again shining in the World Cup itself.

Somerset’s decision to snap up Babar for this season’s Vitality T20 Blast has proven an inspired one, the Pakistan star making scores of 35, 7, 95*, 83, 43, 4, and 56 so far. He looked in good touch once more when top scoring against Essex at the beginning of the week and looks a fair price at the top of the order to do so again on Saturday night.
