Declan Carroll trained Santry suffers fatal gallops injury

Trainer Declan Carroll has suffered a huge blow after stable star Santry suffered a fatal injury during routine exercise on Wednesday morning.

The two-year-old son of Harbour Watch won his first two starts at Doncaster and York before filling the runner-up spot behind Sioux Nation in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

The form was boosted when Sioux Nation struck Group One glory in the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh last Sunday and Santry was due to return to York for the Gimcrack Stakes on Saturday week.

However, speaking at Beverley on Wednesday, Carroll said: "He broke a leg on the gallops this morning. I can't believe we've lost him."
