The Punting Pointers team of Rory Delargy and David Massey highlight their selections for today's racing.
Racing betting tips: Saturday July 11
1pt e.w Yanifer in the 14:10 York at 14/1 (General; 1/5 1,2,3,4,5) – min 11/1
1pt e.w Illy’s Roo in the 15:55 York at 25/1 (General; 1/5 1,2,3) - min 20/1
14:10 York – Class 3 (0-95) Handicap 7f
Morte Point carries a 5lb penalty for last week’s decisive Chepstow win, but everything fell right for him there, and this represents a step up in class, making him look opposable with the quick return far from certain to suit, either.
YANIFER has a 7f/1m handicap record on ground described as good to firm of 222723121, while his course form reads 17220, with the first of his unplaced efforts coming on unsuitably soft ground and the latest blip coming after a 252-day absence when he was entitled to need the run and not beaten far. Harriet Bethell is 2-3 over the past fortnight, so her yard is clearly in good form, and Yanifer should improve for that seasonal return.
14:45 York - William Hill Summer Stakes (Listed) 6f
Spicy Marg sets the standard on recent form, and her head second to Venetian Sun in the Commonwealth Cup was no fluke. She looked superb beforehand and has clearly strengthened from two to three. If anything, it is surprising she lines up here, as that run would have justified a tilt at stronger races in the coming weeks — Venetian Sun, for instance, is a warm favourite for the July Cup at the time of writing. Spicy Marg is well berthed in stall 2, with the first three home last year coming from stalls 2, 3 and 4.
Flora Of Bermuda had excuses in the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, where she became badly worked up in the stalls and should have been withdrawn by the starter. From stall 1, her chance is obvious if that experience has not left a mark. It’s worth having her in a reverse forecast with the selection by means of a saver, with a Spicy Marg/Flora of Bermuda forecast a double whammy for backers of the form filly.
15:55 York - Class 4 (0-80) Handicap 7f192y
The key piece of form here may be the 7f handicap run here at the May meeting, with Zarvali and ILLY'S ROO the two to take from it. Both step up to a mile which should suit, and while Zarvali is the more obvious one given he’s quickly shown improved form since moving to Roger Fell from Dermot Weld, it’s hard to resist the odds about Illy’s Roo, who has been ignored in the betting despite catching the eye on his last two starts.
Illy’s Roo finished one place behind Zarvali here in May, with the pair both shaping well having run into some traffic in the straight. He again shaped as though ready for a mile when staying on late over seven furlongs at Doncaster last time, where his rider did not get anywhere near the bottom of him, and while Gemma Tutty’s quiet spell is a concern, this trip ought to produce some improvement from the son of Australia, and another drop in the weights since Doncaster makes him look dangerously well handicapped.
