Amateur rider James Ridley gets 28 day suspension

Amateur rider James Ridley received a 28-day ban after mistaking the Newbury finish-line and dropping his hands to ultimately finish third.

Ridley appeared to have the BJP Insurance Brokers Open Hunters' Chase (click for free video replay) in safe keeping after nearest pursuer Duke Of Lucca unseated rider at the final fence and the jockey could be seen patting his mount on the neck and celebrating with a clench of the fist.

However, the race - run over a trip just shy of three miles - was far from over and Ridley appeared to mistake the half-furlong marker for the line and eased his mount right down.

Strides before the actual finishing post, 100/30 chance Triangular and Ballytober (9/1) flew past the helpless 33/1 shot Lookslikerainted to land the jockey in trouble with the local stewards.

Triangular, under Ben Godfrey, was giving trainer Ciara Fry, wife of Harry Fry, her first winner from her first runner under Rules.

At the resulting inquiry, Ridley confirmed the half-furlong pole had caused the problem, with the stewards ruling he was guilty of failing to ride out on a horse that would have finished first.

Lookslikerainted's trainer, Martin Wilesmith, took the reverse in good spirit.

"Listen, obviously I'm a little upset but compared to what happened on Westminster Bridge the other day it is absolutely nothing," said Wilesmith.

"I'm thrilled with the horse and just looking forward to when we can run him again now.

"Nobody has died so we'll just look forwards. James has apologised."
