Our columnist looks back on his recent winners including a Breeders' Cup-bound juvenile before guiding us through what's to come.
I'm happy with how the horses are looking at home at the moment and, together with seven or eight new acquisitions at Tattersalls, we've had some success on the track recently which has obviously been good for the whole team.
Mussab is a horse we've liked all along and he did well to win the Cornwallis Stakes last week. He disappointed us a fraction in the Gimcrack but coming back to five furlongs has helped.
He seems to just want to run and he did well as I just thought maybe the draw wasn't ideal at Newmarket. When you're stuck on a wing, you can often get two lengths further back than you want but to be honest at no stage did I think he was going to get beaten.
He's off to the Breeders' Cup now and it's exciting for the owners and for us, it's definitely something to look forward to - he'll go for the Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland.
On the same afternoon we had a one-two up at York which is always worth celebrating. Golden Strike got the better of First Time and I felt a bit sorry for Phil [Smith, owner of First Time] as he travelled like the winner but didn't quite see it out. We'll drop back to six furlongs and see what happens but that might suit.
The winner’s gone up 4lb and has been a good horse for us. He's in the horses-in-training sales.
We also had a two-year-old winner with Diamondsforyou making it third time lucky at Southwell. I don't know anything about the gamble on her as it certainly wasn't my money, it probably wasn't much of a race but she did it well enough. Those Richard Henry [owner] families are good, you've always a chance of getting a winner with them and it's nice to see her win.
Ice Sovereigns also got us on the board up at Musselburgh on Monday which was nice. She did get a soft lead which probably helped but it was good to see her win for owner Sheikh Juma. I don't think she'll go up much in the weights for that, she's another horse going to the sale.
Newcastle, Friday
16:08 - Mr Moonshine
He's been a little bit disappointing, he ran alright here the other day when maybe we made too much use of him. It wouldn't be a surprise if he bounced back ands went close in this.
16:43 - Yahreh
He's been a very disappointing horse, we do like him. His last two runs have been ordinary so fingers crossed he runs a race as it wouldn't be a shock to me if he won.
18:15 - They All Know Me
He has ability and ran well at Carlisle a couple of starts ago. He disappointed on soft ground at Ayr last time as he'd won on similar ground before. Fingers crossed he runs his race here.
20:15 - Masai Angel
He'll get it together one day this horse. He was a tearaway but he'll get there, he ran a decent enough racde when beaten just over a length here last month and I'm hoping he can just build on that now as the handicapped has dropped him again. Billy [Garritty] gets a good tune out of him and he was adamant we should drop him to five furlongs which the horse hasn't tried before so maybe that'll help. He's a horse who should win races.
Redcar, Friday
17:23 - Boy Named Sioux
He needs to get his game together but we're happy enough with him at home. I'm hoping he can show a bit more on the track here.
Catterick, Saturday
14:10 - Black Orchid
We've got Black Orchid in first-time cheekpieces and I'd love to see her get her head in front. The Crisfords have one under a penalty who looks a danger to all. She's done nothing wrong really and hopefully this is her day.
16:45 - Vintage Clarets
He's drawn 12 of 12 but maybe they'll come away from the far rail and it won't be as bad as you might think. He's getting a bit old but I'm not sure he's ready for retirement - he's run in this race many times and won it a couple of times too but he's not quite the force of old.
