Matt Brocklebank had 3/1 and 7/4 winners on Thursday - now Ben Linfoot returns to preview the Friday racing.
REACHING HIGH - a daughter of Gold Cup winner Estimate and by the great Sea The Stars - was spotted doing some good late work on his seasonal return at Windsor last month and now goes handicapping from an opening mark of just 74. His half-brother Evaluation was fifth in the same Windsor novice in 2021 before progressing to a peak rating of 93 and this gelding looks highly likely to step up quite considerably. Trainer Sir Michael Stoute is only just getting rolling for the year but recent signs are encouraging in that regard and this horse has clear potential.
At a likely big price it could be worth chancing Ruth Carr’s FORESEEABLE FUTURE in the Ripon Races Ladies Day 20th June Handicap on Friday. In an open race, the bottom weight is interesting off a good mark of 61 – a rating from which he won at this track in this month last year, while he also scored at Thirsk and Musselburgh off 61 and 63 respectively thereafter. He needed his first run back at Catterick and then hit his stall back at Musselburgh last time, so he’s had excuses as the handicapper dropped him 4lb.
Richard Hannon’s THE BIG BOARD is a tough filly to predict but second-time out and back at Ascot she looks a player in the Peroni 0.0% Live Every Moment Handicap. The daughter of Profitable was hit and miss last year but she won at this track off a 2lb higher mark in July and then ran a cracker at York off 6lb higher when fourth behind Summerghand in August. On those bits of form she has a good chance here off 90 and she shaped like she needed her return at Newmarket.
An unlucky loser in last year’s Chester Cup, LAW OF THE SEA can make amends by landing the consolation Duke Of Westminster Supporting The Chester Plate Handicap on Friday. Ian Williams’ horse ran into trouble in last year’s Cup, finishing a close-up fourth at a big price, before he confirmed the promise of that run with good efforts at Haydock and Ascot subsequently. Off since October, he’s now 2lb lower than his Cup fourth and we know he goes well fresh.
Division one of the Book Summer Plate Ladies Day Now Handicap Hurdle can go to GET A SUPERSTAR for Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole. Newland has a great record at Market Rasen in the summer months and he looks to have found a nice 0-100 for this handicap debutant who shaped nicely in third in a maiden hurdle at Fakenham on his latest start.
A nice bit of placing from Donald McCain can see CAMARRATE home for the Owners Group in the opening novice hurdle at Sedgefield. The 6lb allowance for four-year-olds effectively wipes out the penalty this horse gained for winning at Fakenham last time out and at this time of the season it looks a significant concession against a decidedly average bunch of older horses.
Roger Varian takes one horse to Nottingham’s evening card and his CONDOR PASA could be the one in the opening novice stakes at 5.27. The son of Siyouni has been gelded since last seen but he made a bright start with two good efforts in defeat at Kempton at the start of the year, shaping as though he’ll thrive when handicapping over a bit further. That might well be the case, but the extra half furlong and Nottingham’s long straight looks sure to play to his strengths in this.
