SHALFA – 14:20 Wincanton (NAP)
Plantaroma will have plenty of fans with cheekpieces applied now down in grade back over hurdles, but she isn’t easy to win with, as her maiden tag suggests, and this winnable race can instead go to one of the handicap debutantes. The pick of those is SHALFA who was a winner on the Flat as recently as September, and she looks to have been brought along steadily over hurdles with handicaps in mind. Indeed, she has been held up in recent starts which is at odds with her general style of racing on the level. The headgear is reapplied (blinkers or a visor for all five Flat wins) and this mark of 98 looks realistic, especially if given a forcing ride (Timeform pace prediction is ‘uncontested’).
LIFE AFTER LOVE - 13:42 Lingfield
LIFE AFTER LOVE landed a touch at Southwell, just doing enough to hold off the challenge of Mythical Night (finished third the following week) with the pair pulling seven lengths clear of the third. A 3lb rise should be surmountable and leaves her just one higher than her opening rating. Life After Love is open to further progress and is related to winners at this venue which offers hope that she'll take to the track at the first time of asking.
DE LEGISLATOR – 16:00 Bangor
With more positive signs from the yard this month, DE LEGISLATOR gets the nod with the return to a left-handed track likely to be in his favour (can jump left). The application of cheekpieces at this point a year ago inspired a Wetherby win, where he shaped as if this sort of test would suit, and his third in the Borders National at Kelso in December confirmed it. Lightly raced for his age, and likely to appreciate a decent gallop set by Gold Emery, Astronomic View and Lagonda, this hold-up performer looks the value call for a yard who won this race in 2018 with Itstimeforapint.
I AM ME - 18:40 Kempton
Mike Murphy is enjoying a fine run of form with four winners in his last seven runners and I AM ME looks poised to strike for the yard for the first time. He was allotted a mark of 76 when with Donnacha O'Brien and that rose to 81 after he struck for Ed Bethell last April. I Am Me lost his way thereafter but has shown signs of returning to form for Murphy, finishing third on his last two starts over C&D from ratings in the high 60s. The last start was in a 0-80 and the drop in grade to 0-70 can see I Am Me record a second career success.
