YOUNG BULL – 3.52 Exeter (NAP)
Stamina will be the name of the game in the Devon Stayers Handicap Chase at Exeter on Sunday and that brings Eider Chase and Sandown non-runner YOUNG BULL into the equation.
Well-backed on his return after 286 days off over an inadequate 2m5f at Haydock, he got tired in third late on but it’s reasonable to expect improvement second start back. He has improved on his second start in each of the last four seasons, winning twice, and he’s a proper stayer who should relish this test over almost 3m7f.
A half-brother to stout stayer Shanroe Santos, Young Bull could well take a huge step forward on his second start of the campaign now he steps back up to an extreme distance.
Shanroe Santos won a couple of times in cheekpieces, so it’s interesting Young Bull sports a pair for the first time and given he’s 11lb lower than his peak chase rating he’s handicapped to go well under Sean Bowen.
TRAVAIL D’ORFEVRE – 2.25 Carlisle
Nick Alexander’s horses are in great form and he can land the Go North One Man Series Final Handicap Chase with TRAVAIL D’ORFEVRE at Carlisle.
The seven-year-old grey has racked up enough experience now having had five goes over fences, placing on three occasions, and if he cuts out the odd mistake he can get his maiden chase win now he’s dropped to a mark of 102.
That was the mark he won off when landing his handicap hurdle at Kelso and the combination of testing ground and a stiff track like Carlisle look in his favour.
