SCOVILLE – 16:35 Ascot (NAP)
I’ve said it earlier in the week a couple of times and I’m still of the opinion that SCOVILLE is the best bet on the card at Ascot.
He ran a cracker up with the pace in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, easily faring best of those who were up with the pace, and he caught the eye a couple of times afterwards.
It all came together at Doncaster last time and it was probably one of the smoothest wins you’ll see in a big-field handicap, cutting through rivals to win with plenty in hand. This course will suit him perfectly, especially if given a patient ride like he did the last day, and a subsequent 4lb rise in the weights highly underestimates him in my opinion.
MISTERDOC – 13:42 Newton Abbot
MISTERDOC looked very progressive last season, winning his last two starts at Ludlow and Perth, with the former looking a strong piece of form.
Several next-time-out winners emerged out of that race and, though his latest win isn’t as colourful, he could hardly have won any easier. The feeling is he’s been handed a fair opening mark for his handicap debut, and there can only be more to come from this powerhouse yard.
BALDOMERO – 14:45 Catterick
BALDOMERO is yet to win this year, but he has edged down to a very attractive mark, and he ran one of his best races in a while when narrowly denied in a competitive handicap at York last week.
He can be marked up further, too, given he fared best of those who were drawn in double figures, staying on well in the final furlong, leaving the impression he’s ready to strike. He finds himself in an easier grade of handicap now and, even from a 3lb higher mark, he is sure to launch another bold bid.
CAP RICOCHET – 16:25 Market Rasen
CAP RICOCHET was modest at best over hurdles, but proved a different proposition on his return from nine months off on chasing debut when opening his account over this course and distance last week.
He’s a nice type physically, just the sort to go from strength to strength in this sphere, and he looks the most progressive horse in this field. A 6lb rise in the weights and, given his dam is from the family of Desert Orchid, there’s scope for quite a bit more from his current mark.
ONEHUNDREDNEIGHTY – 16:55 Stratford
ONEHUNDREDNEIGHTY has been well found in the market in all four starts since joining Ben Pauling, and he landed the odds in style on his chase debut at Worcester last month.
He failed to defy odds-on favouritism upped to two and a half miles at the same track on Monday, but a mixed round of jumping was the cause, and he shaped like the best horse at the weights. A mistake at the last cost him victory, but he’s still on the up, and very much the one to beat in this field from the same mark.
THE THIRD STAR – 17:00 Southwell
THE THIRD STAR hasn’t been with Owen Burrows all that long, but she was a winner over seven furlongs at this course for Chris Dwyer, and she proved better than ever when resuming winning ways over this course and distance last month.
She was well found in the market back against her own sex and in a lesser handicap, always travelling well and the turn of foot she showed to go clear will continue to stand her in good stead. The Third Star can be marked up again for how easily she quickened clear off a slow gallop and she’s one to keep on the right side on this surface.
