Potters Corner misses Welsh National date with Aintree in focus

Potters Corner will not try and defend his title in the Coral Welsh Grand National at Chepstow on December 27.

Trainer Christian Williams has decided to skip the race this year with his main target for the season being the Randox Health Grand National at Aintree in April.

Potters Corner will go the Tiger Roll route, including the Cross Country at the Cheltenham Festival in March, with a run in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham on December 11 pencilled for his next start.

Williams said: "I know the horse well, I've had him since he was a four-year-old, and he just didn't come out of the Welsh National last year like we hoped he would, he had a very hard race and his body told me there's only X-amount of those National-type races left in him.

"We'll go down the Cross Country route. They're on a different leg all the time, turning left, turning right and they're not exhausting the same body part. The ground doesn't get as soft on the Cross Country track, they only race on it two or three times a year, so you could run in him those races and then run him a day later.

"It just took us so long after the Welsh National to get him back to normal. We just think we've got a chance of being competitive in the Grand National and to give him the best crack at that we thought the Cross Country route was the best route.

"He always improves a lot for his first run so I was delighted at Cheltenham. He really took to it and enjoyed it so we hope he takes another step forward in December.

"It's brilliant to have a Grand National hopeful in the yard. I'm taking the positives from the Virtual National result as well - a lot of data goes into that! It would be great to win the race."

Williams won't have a runner in the Welsh National this time around after scratching Kitty's Light, as well.

"He could go to the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby at Christmas but ultimately we'll be working backwards from the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown with him.

"That'll be his main target this season, he's only a four-year-old but I'm very excited about him. He shows us stuff at home which suggests he might be quite special."
