Old Persian books Royal Ascot ticket after Newmarket win

A review of the feature action from Newmarket on Saturday as Charlie Appleby and William Buick teamed up on the Rowley Mile once again.

Old Persian could step up into Group Two company for the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot after a game success at Newmarket.

The Godolphin-owned son of Dubawi showed a willing attitude to beat two rivals and register a third course victory in the Betway Fairway Stakes.

The Charlie Appleby-trained colt was sent off 1/2 favourite, but was pushed all the way to beat Court House, the outsider of three.

Old Persian and Department Of War went head to head from the start of the 10-furlong contest, until the latter started to fade from a quarter of a mile out.

Court House then put in his bid and William Buick had to bustle up Old Persian to get on top close home and score by half a length.

"He was entitled to go off favourite and I thought he was the one to beat," said Appleby.

"Going forward I think stepping him up in trip will see further improvement.

"We'll take a look at something like the King Edward VII at Royal Ascot and probably head there. I know he's going up in grade, but the step up in trip is going to suit him.

"He's got a good head on him. He tries and he wants it. It makes things a lot easier."

Purser battled on well to lift the Betway Charles II Stakes and follow up a victory at last month's Craven meeting.

Rab Havlin had the John Gosden-trained colt on the front end from the outset, in what was a steadily-run race.

Purser first had to see of Aurum and was then challenged late on by Mutaaqeb, but the 6/4 favourite would not be denied and got home by a neck.
