No grand plans for Roger Charlton trained Herculean

Roger Charlton will take a steady approach with Herculean following the Frankel colt's return to action last week.

The Khalid Abdullah-owned three-year-old was having his first start since his sole juvenile outing in September, where he beat the also-promising Wadilsafa at Ascot.

The pair renewed rivalries at Newmarket, with the form reversed as Wadilsafa got the better of things by three and a quarter lengths, although he was in receipt of 7lb.

Charlton said: "I was a little disappointed, but I don't think he would want ground as fast as that. I don't think he was suited running into the dip. I think he wants 10 furlongs, but there is better to come.

"I think it will turn out to be a good race. I think the winner was very good, they have always thought very highly of him.

"I don't think we will be running at Group One level next and I don't think he will be going to Royal Ascot. I think we need to step back before we go forwards with him."

The Beckhampton trainer also had news of Almodovar, who was second to the smart Crystal Ocean on his reappearance.

He said: "I think there is a chance he will run in the Prix d'Ispahan. I think nine furlongs on a Flat track is better than 10 furlongs on an undulating track for him. I think realistically he has a place possibility in the race rather than a winning one."
