Nicola Currie banned for 10 days following Lingfield ride

Nicola Currie was handed a 10-day ban by the Lingfield stewards for failing to take "all reasonable and permissible measures" to obtain the best possible position on Tojosimbre.

Currie, a 7lb apprentice based with John Berry, was in the news for all the right reasons at the St Leger meeting when winning on Berry's Kryptos (pictured).

However, she was called into an inquiry at Lingfield after finishing fourth of 13 in the Southern Testing 50th Anniversary Handicap over two miles.

The race was won in easy style by Sir Mark Prescott's Alternate Route, who put the race to bed a long way from home, but Tojosimbre, trained by Richard Hughes, finished on the heels of the placed horses beaten just over five lengths.

Currie stated her instructions were to take her time given it was his first run over two miles, but with the benefit of hindsight, she admitted she had probably let those in front of her get too far away.

Hughes' representative confirmed the instructions and that he was satisfied with the ride, he also confirmed that Tojosimbre needs gentle handling and "does not benefit from being bullied" in a race.

Taking all of that into account, the stewards banned Currie for 10 days.

Will Hudson, acting stipendiary steward, told At The Races: "We reviewed the race and her ride caused us some concerns, so we called an inquiry.

"Miss Currie stated her instructions were to drop him out as he has been keen and he was stepping up significantly in trip today.

"We asked ourselves whether Miss Currie asked the horse for a real, substantial and timely effort. Miss Currie said in her own evidence she probably let the leaders get away.

"We were satisfied it was real and substantial effort, but considered it wasn't timely as she allowed the leaders to get too far ahead before asking for her effort and she finished strongly.

"It's Rule B 59.4, found guilty of failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures to obtain the best possible placing. She was given 10 days which is the entry point for that rule."
