15:50 Newmarket - 0-80 6f Handicap

I’m sweet on the chances of RAJAKING here, who looks ready to win on his third start for Terry Kent after leaving Stuart Williams at the end of last season.

He clearly needed his first start of the year at Newmarket on the Rowley Course, but stepped up considerably on that when a close fourth in a better contest than this at Windsor last time, staying on well to be beaten a length and a half by Diligently. That form is already working out well, with runner-up Indian Run and ninth home Fleetwater both winners in their next starts, and the fifth and seventh home both ran just as well, if not better, in hitting the frame on their next starts too.

This 0-80 is not only a bit easier, but Rajaking’s record on the July Course over this trip reads two runs, two second places, narrowly beaten on both occasions from higher marks than today, and all looks in place for a big run, with Jack Callan further reducing his burden today.

15:20 Leicester - 1m2f Handicap

One of the most interesting runners on the Ladies Day card at Leicester (Go West heading the bill, remember them, pop kids?) is Dylan Cunha’s AARC AT HER, who makes her handicap debut in a pretty moderate contest here. She’s looked a handicap project from the word go, in truth, and the only flash of ability she’s shown so far was when a staying-on fourth at Wolverhampton in May. I’d say, though, that that form hasn’t worked out too badly at all; winner Mountain Cat ran respectably in the Ribblesdale, the second home won a novice at Windsor next time and third Leopards Rock was runner-up to Viper at Newcastle, so it’s a bit better than it first looks.

It’s this step up in trip on quicker ground today that ought to see her in a better light; the dam, Alboretta, wasn’t seen at her best until tackling a trip (won over two miles) and Arc At Her looks very much in the same mould, stamina rather than speed likely to prove her long suit. Leicester’s stiff 10f should be right up her street, then, and although Rory often accuses me of being the King Of Wishful Thinking (see what I did there) she really wouldn’t have to be a superstar to get involved today.

16:30 Leicester - 7f Handicap

Only the seven runners but a race we looked at, came up with slightly different answers to, but both can see the others point of view and in the end we agreed the pair might simply be well handicapped and better than a fairly exposed lot, so it’s a race worth a write-up, at the very least.

I was with Frantic, who ran future York handicap winner Bintaryana to a length and a quarter at Nottingham back in May, form that’s obviously worked out well, not just via the winner but from those in behind too, two of whom also won on their next starts. She then came here and “won” her small group, but sadly Polka Blue was on the other side of the track, and was too good for her - again, though, the form has worked out well - and I’d simply write Thirsk off last time, a slow start not helping her cause, but finding no room when she needed it, and looking ready for a step up in trip in any case.

The other in the field where the form is working out well is Mr Writer; the second and third from the Catterick maiden he won at the end of May have both win since, and his close fifth to Annastarzy at Goodwood last time received a boost when the winner went in again at Newbury earlier in the week. That was over a mile and conversely, he looked like a drop back in trip would benefit him.

The prices are about right this morning rather than overpriced, but we expect the pair to be fighting the finish out.
