Jean-Claude Rouget's Mekhtaal has Royal Ascot aim

Mekhtaal could bid to add a second Group One to his CV in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.

The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained four-year-old saw off British raider Robin Of Navan by a neck in the Prix d'Ispahan at Chantilly last weekend.

That was just his third start at the highest level and Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Al Shaqab Racing, believes the 10-furlong heat on June 21 could be the next option for Mekhtaal.

He said: "It was very exciting and he ran a terrific race. He could now go to Royal Ascot for the Prince of Wales's Stakes.

"He has improved and is more mature this year. "It was a really good run and it's great to have won a Group One with him."

Another Al Shaqab runner with an Ascot engagement in Aljezeera, who finished third behind Oaks contender Natavia at Newbury earlier this month and holds a Ribblesdale Stakes entry.

Having just her second start after winning at Doncaster last August, the Frankel filly was beaten seven and a half lengths, but Herbert felt neither the soft ground nor 10-furlong trip were in her favour.

He said: "We will have a look at whether she goes for the Ribblesdale, but she really wants a mile and a half, minimum.

"She could develop into a Park Hill type later in the season.

"It was a good run at Newbury, though, on ground that didn't really suit her."
