Dundalk Market Movers
By Michael Shinners
It’s no surprise that Dundalk has been very popular with punters and a number of horses have been well supported.
The first race on the card is an open looking apprentice handicap. Sky Bet are paying two extra places in the race, so It’s no surprise that one of the slightly bigger priced runners has attracted support. The horse in question is Sir Danilo (7/1 from 9/1) who ran well after a very long absence to finish 5th behind today's current favourite Kinch.
The second race on the card looks like it rests between the first three in the betting, with the Henry De Bromhead trained Aerclub the strongest in the market. The son of Charm Spirit has proved very strong in the market and is 6/4 from 15/8 to take the Median Auction contest. The strength behind Aerclub has meant relative weakness in the second favourite Flower Garland who has drifted out to 9/4.
The third race on the card is the claimer and the formerly talented Yuften is a clear form pick on all known form. His price reflects his chances, although he was well beaten last time out in what was clearly a much hotter contest than this. If there is an each way horse in the race it could be Northern Surprise who has been backed in from 22/1 to 16/1.
The maiden is next up and despite the obvious claims of Juliet Rose, who ran very well last time out to finish second, Sky Bet customers have found a couple of horses at each way prices to take on the favourite. The two horses in question are Haparanda (9/2 from 9/1) and Figurehaed (7/1 from 11/1). Both horses would need to step up on the debut performances, but the money for them suggests that this is expected this afternoon.
The next race on the card is a typically open looking Dundalk handicap. There have been two horses that have caught Sky Bet customers eyes, one fairly obvious and the other less so. At the top of the market Followme Followyou has been all the rage and backed into 9/4 from 3/1.
The second of the supported horses is not so obvious to find, although the lure of an extra place could well be a reason behind the support.. The John McConnell trained Mere Ironmonger has yet to trouble the judge and is no spring chicken at the age of 8. However, support for the Ross Coakley ridden runner has been solid and he has halved in price from 18/1 to 9/1.
The sixth race on the card has a very open feel to it and after a fair few moves the market appears to have settled on two horses, in the shape of Cautious Approach (11/4 from 7/2) and Muzbid (9/2 from 7/1). Both horses can point to some solid course form and if the betting is anything to go by they will be looking to fight out the finish.
The penultimate race on the card looks a very competitive heat with solid support for the favourite Major Power who is looking to win a fourth consecutive race. However, judging by the support for Fit For Function he won’t find this an easy task. The seven year old ridden by Gary Carroll has been consistently backed throughout the morning and is currently 5/2 from an opening 11/2.
The last race on the card see’s the best backed horse on the card in the form of Lequinto (7/4 from 5/2). After three runs where he failed to trouble the judge the son of Requinto ran easily his best race last time when finishing third in a similar race.
The jockey booking of Wayne Lordan is clearly a positive, as is the fact Fran Berry in his Sportinglife column gave the horse an excellent chance. This race is another extra place race and the Ronan Whelan ridden Lady Susan has been backed from double figure prices into 15/2.
