Having a first run since wind surgery, California Soul did a little better at Uttoxeter. Chosen Flame placed yet again over 2m4f here last month but, like Gemologist, is still seeking a first victory over timber. Old Jewry was last seen over fences in February while there have been few signs that Set In Stone has taken to jumping. ZABEEL STAR was slowly away on the Flat at Musselburgh 12 days ago having won earlier at Beverley. He was keeping better company over timber at the start of the year and should be up to landing this.

This looks a straight fight between the unbeaten Petrastar and the returning C’EST LE BONHEUR. The former has to give the latter 14lb and has an extra half-mile to cover and fitness is unlikely to be an issue for Richard Newland’s point-to-point and bumper winner, despite a lengthy absence. The market will tell us all we need to know about the others.

SOMETHINBOUTANGELA started off between the flags so, even though she won over timber in Ireland, was always likely to make a better chaser than hurdler and she had a run at Market Rasen last month where she was only headed at the last. Dr Hooves won over this trip at Musselburgh in February and has had wind surgery since while Court Dreaming won over hurdles here in 2018. Western Aussie, who has been very lightly raced, looks the pick of the remainder.

Petite Ganache and Court Baloo are closely matched on their 1-2 at Musselburgh in January but the winner hasn’t raced since. Chocolat Noir did well to hold off Henry’s Joy at Cartmel but this looks a stronger race, though Martin Todhunter's mare did win here last year. Richard Johnson has chosen CRAIGMOR (NAP) ahead of St Lawrence Gap and Olly Murphy’s recent Market Rasen winner can score for a sixth time under Rules.

Fubar will likely be near the head of the market again but always seems to find a way of getting beat. It’s almost two years since Ronava last ran over hurdles and he’s not getting any younger while Ardera Cross is also better known as a chaser. Celtic Flames has also done mots of his winning over the larger obstacles but he has been successful here in the past and will enjoy any give in the ground. A mistake at the second-last knocked the stuffing out of PAMMI here last month. She’d travelled strongly to that point and is probably still on a decent mark.

GREAT COLACI has finished second three times on the Flat since winning over 7f at Newcastle in June. He’s placed twice over track and trip in the past and is one of the more likely winners of a low-grade handicap. Wise Coco’s only success to date came over course and distance last year but she’s still 5lb higher and Lady Samback is 3lb higher than when successful here in May of last year. Effet Special may be best of the rest.

Forecast has placed in both starts over fences so far but may not be as effective on this evening’s going as course specialist AMALFI DOUG. The top weight has slipped to a fair mark and Brian Hughes rides – a run over hurdles here three weeks ago will have blown away the cobwebs. River Frost is hard to catch right and Cracking Destiny needs to rediscover his best form but Boy's On Tour could play a part and Red Giant is back on a winning mark, though probably needs further.

Istimraar keeps plugging away but is surely due a rest. Our Lucas started favourite here three weeks ago but only finished fourth and was a couple of lengths behind outsider Cool Valley. FRESH NEW DAWN didn’t get far on his chasing bow but could figure in a race like this with a clear round so is preferred to Walkin In The Rain and Beautiful Ben, who has yet to fire this term and would have preferred quicker ground.

Tara Kay is bred for jumping and Diamond State is a likely improver but the two stand-outs on form are HEADSCARF LIL and Lady Bowes. Nicky Richards’ mare has been a beaten favourite the last twice and her turn may have finally come around as her likely market rival seems to prefer the mud.
