Friday Newbury review: Madeline in York frame

Next month's Lowther Stakes at York is a likely next port of call for Madeline following her impressive display in the Bathwick Tyres Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury.

Next month's Lowther Stakes at York is a likely next port of call for Madeline following her impressive display in the Bathwick Tyres Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury.

Having built on an encouraging Ascot debut with a maiden success at Goodwood, the Kodiac filly tested her powers in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last month and was far from disgraced in finishing fifth.

With the form having worked out well following the subsequent Group-race victories of both the sixth (Actress) and seventh (Clemmie), Madeline was the 13-8 favourite back at Listed level and travelled strongly throughout.

Once popped the question by Andrea Atzeni, Varian's charge picked up well to see off another Albany runner, Natural, by two and a quarter lengths. Another Batt fared best of the colts in third.

Varian said: "She ran very well at Ascot and won nicely at Goodwood the time before. She's a filly we've always liked.

"It's nice to make her a stakes winner and we'll be doing our best to add to her CV during the remainder of the rest of the season.

"The Lowther (August 24) would look the logical next step. She gets the six furlongs very well and I think she would quicken a bit sharper on faster ground.

"She's not the biggest, but she's very strong and very fast. She looks a real two-year-old, but let's hope she's a good three-year-old, too."

The Mark Johnston-trained Mildenberger (4-1) looks set for a swift step up in class after maintaining his unbeaten record in the first division of the Upham Brewery EBF Novice Stakes.

The son of Teofilo had to concede 6lb to each of his 10 rivals having made a successful racecourse debut at Haydock a fortnight ago, but shrugged off the penalty in some style under Oisin Murphy, making every yard of the running and passing the post five lengths clear of Ode To Autumn.

The seven-furlong contest was run at the second attempt after a false start was called first time around due to one of the stalls failing to open.

Charlie Johnston, assistant to his father, said: "It just goes to show you how well schooled our horses are as he jumped out first not once but twice!

"I was very impressed with him. We were hopeful he was above average before Haydock. He won nicely that day, but in the style of a horse who would improve as he was still quite green.

"We could have chosen an easier place for him to try and win with a penalty, but we came here with half an eye on finding out whether he could be a contender for the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood (August 1).

"After the way he's won today it looks a strong possibility. We'll obviously have to discuss it with the owners, but I think we're looking at that sort of level now."

Stage Magic was just as dominant in division two in the hands of William Buick.

Charlie Appleby's youngster shaped with abundant promise when runner-up on his Haydock debut last month and the 8-11 favourite went one better with a four-and-a-half-length verdict over Albishr.

"He got a bit of a knock at Haydock and lost his action and William (Buick) just sat on him to let him get his action back. He then obviously made great late headway," said Appleby.

"He came out of the race very well and we were confident coming into today he'd take a bit of pegging back.

"I think we'll stick to seven furlongs for the moment, but he'll get further in time."

Richard Hannon and Sean Levey combined to land the bet365 EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes with the impressive Mayyasah (12-1).

Ralph Beckett's Mistress Quickly justified 7-2 favouritism in the AJC Premier Fillies' Handicap under Pat Dobbs, while Jukebox Jive (13-8) was another winning favourite in the Bathwick Tyres Handicap for Anthony Honeyball and John Egan.

Champion jockey Jim Crowley steered Paul Cole's 7-1 shot World Power to victory in the R & M Electrical Group Handicap.

The concluding Oakley Coachbuilders Apprentice Handicap went to 9-4 chance Champagne Bob, trained by Richard Price and ridden by Jonathan Fisher.
