Betfred Valiant Fillies' Stakes and rest of Ascot review

Lady Bowthorpe took her career to new heights to give trainer William Jarvis his first Group race success in 12 years in the Betfred Valiant Fillies' Stakes at Ascot.

Having opened her account on her return to action in handicap company at Lingfield last month, the daughter of Nathaniel continued her rise through the ranks to run out a stylish winner of the Group Three prize.

Sweeping down the outside of her rivals, the 12/1 shot found plenty for pressure once sent on by Kieran Shoemark to cross the line four and three-quarter lengths clear of runner-up Farzeen.

Jarvis said: "I've always thought she is good. She has been unlucky not to win more races. Things just haven't panned out her way, but she is smart.

"All credit to James Toller as he said we should run her in this race. I prepared her and trained her and he pushed me to go for the race.

"I was very impressed with the way she did it. She hasn't quite achieved what we hoped she would, but she is owned by a very patient owner. It is her first Group winner and she is a valuable filly now.

"Pontefract didn't go to plan as she was drawn nine of nine which was not great for her, but it has all come good for her today."

Although Jarvis has enjoyed plenty of winners since Gravitation provided him with his last Pattern race success in the 2008 renewal of the Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood, it was a victory he was keen to make the most of.

He added: "I've had plenty of Listed winners and plenty of handicap winners, but it has been a long time since we have had a Group winner.

"You have got to deal with the cards you are dealt and when you get a good one, make the most of it. It is nice to have a good one in the yard again."

Charlie Fellowes praised his team after Jeremiah (8/1) gained his first win in almost two years in the Betfred "Fred's Pushes" Handicap.

Having missed last season through injury, the talented but fragile gelding got his career back on track when surviving a stewards' inquiry to see off Sam Cooke by a nose.

The Newmarket handler said: "I can't underestimate the performance from the team to get this horse's head back in front.

"Not only did he have a horrible injury two years ago, but he is not the most straightforward horse to train as he is very quirky, so it is unbelievable to get his head back in front.

"Jim (Crowley) gave him a lovely ride and was very confident on him. He has lots of ability but he really is quirky.

"I'm definitely not ruling out the Ebor as you can't rule out a race like that. I will speak to Jim (Crowley) and see what he thinks about stepping up in trip.

"He didn't stay two miles in the Northumberland Plate and whether he would stay a mile six, I'm not sure."

Twenty four hours after Enable's unprecedented third King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes win, champion trainer John Gosden was on hand to see Tenbury Wells (15/8) get up almost on the line to claim the Betfred Mobile Handicap by a neck.

Gosden said: "I would have thought a mile and a quarter is where he belongs. It is not an easy draw on the outside here and he was back a long way.

"We will see where he progresses from here, but I don't think we will do anything too dramatic at the moment."

A word in the ear of the handicapper from Stuart Williams appeared to have the desired effect on Tone The Barone (18/1), who defeated stablemate Equitation by a length in the Play Nifty Fifty Exclusively At Betfred Handicap.

Williams said: "I've been moaning like mad at the handicapper for putting his mark up 19lb for winning three fairly ordinary all-weather races and went up that much on turf.

"After getting beat here two weeks ago he split the marks and gave him 4lb lower on the turf than all-weather. He has been a very good money spinner for the yard."

Tom Marquand notched a fifth win aboard Rose Hip (2/1) when holding Ishvara by a head in the betfred.com Fillies' Handicap.

Marquand said: "I think the Ascot five might be a touch stiff for her. In that grade there was nothing that could take me far enough and I was forced to commit at the furlong pole.

"I'd be very surprised if she didn't step up another grade again."

Clive Cox enjoyed a change of luck as River Nymph (16/1) bounced back to form with a two-length win in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Handicap.

Cox said: "He didn't handle the track at Newmarket last time. He is such a reliable work horse and I'm delighted to get his confidence back there."
