Colin Keane rides first winner for Aidan O'Brien on Khartoum

Colin Keane booted home his first winner for trainer Aidan O'Brien as Khartoum won the opening race at the Curragh on Sunday.

Seeking a second Irish Flat jockeys' championship having won the title in 2017, Keane picked up three rides for Ballydoyle on the Irish Cesarewitch card, mainly down to the current absence of both Seamie Heffernan and Wayne Lordan, and made no mistake at the first time of asking.

Khartoum, third on debut at Naas last month, was sent off 2/1 favourite for the seven-furlong Curragh Where Champions Are Made Maiden and was soon sent straight to the front from stall seven.

Keane kept the son of Pioneerof The Nile rolling on the inside rail and he stayed on strongly to see off Sheila Lavery's Supershock (9/1) by two and a quarter lengths. Salvucci was third at 6/1 for trainer Jim Bolger.

Keane said on Racing TV: "I was delighted to be getting the call-up and I'm delighted to get a winner for him."

The jockey added: "He's a big, raw, unfurnished horse. I was talking to Aidan beforehand and he said that he'd come forward from Naas which he has and you would imagine he will come forward from today.

"He should turn into a nice mile to mile and a quarter horse next year on nicer ground but he handled that ground well. It's nice to get off the mark for him. I'd one ride for him last year but no joy."

The jockey was back in the winner's circle after a wide-margin win for Noel Meade's Helvic Dream (6/1) in the Group Three Novi IT Services International Stakes.

The three-year-old was held up near the back but cruised through the pack to challenge Up Hell Aa who had a dream run and looked to have made his move turning in. Helvic Dream sprouted wings approaching the last furlong and darted clear in tremendous fashion.

Up Helly Aa - the 2/1 favourite - boxed on at the one pace for second, while third went to 16/1 chance Raise You.

Meade said of the winner: "I thought he was good all year but things just haven't gone right for him with one thing and another. I don't know where he will go next, and there is the possibility we could travel with him. He'll stick to Stakes races now.

"We have schooled him over barrels but that will probably go out the window now.

"Colin was riding the O'Brien horses today but he told me the other day he was riding this horse which was nice to hear. We get on well together and it gave me a bit of satisfaction that he stuck with me.

"He loves soft ground. He wouldn't want fast ground, but I think he'll go on good ground."

John McConnell's A Case Of You won the Group Three Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey Stakes.

The Hot Streak colt was sent off a well-backed 6/1 chance following an impressive maiden win at Down Royal early last month and duly delivered with a defeat of the O'Brien-trained Lipizzaner at odds of 6/1 under Gary Carroll.

McConnell, registering his first success at the Curragh, said: "Usually if I have a good horse I stay away from the Curragh because the competition is so good but he justified coming here and was impressive.

"Colin (Keane) had done work on him during the week but had to ride for Mr O'Brien and he gave Gary advice.

"He won a barrier trial impressively and then I shouldn't have run him in Bellewstown (over a mile) and he won well in Down Royal.

"It's my first Group winner on the Flat. Shane Lyons advised me to go for this race and I doubt if he will run again this year. He's in the Foran race next week but I think we will leave that to someone else.

"He handled Dundalk well so he will have no problem on better ground. He's my own and I'd love to sell him. It would be great to sell him and stay in the yard. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets faster and faster and the dream could be something like a Commonwealth Cup."

Paddy Twomey's Fantasy Lady (10/1) broke her duck at the third time of asking in the Listed Staffordstown Stud Stakes.

Waited with towards the back of the field, she made smooth headway on the outside of rivals and picked up the running inside the final furlong.

Billy Lee drove her out for a last-gasp, short-head success over 7/1 shot Sense Of Style, with La Joconde third at 12s. The disappointment of the race was 3/1 favourite Earth Strike for trainer Joseph O'Brien.

The winning jockey said: "She's a very nice filly. The draw wasn't great so I had to tuck in and take my time a bit.

"She had two lovely runs. The six in Cork was a bit sharp and then Dundalk was probably not ideal for her but it was a good run behind a good horse. We were coming here to get some black type but we did like her. She was a winner in waiting of a maiden and is one to look forward to now for next year."

The Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital Handicap went to 9/2 market leader Lustown Baba, who powered home to beat Rough Diamond by seven and a half lengths, with a head back to Wonder Elzaam in third.
