FIRST LAW – 13:55 Newmarket (NAP)
FIRST LAW has been very good in his two career starts to date, winning narrowly at Sandown on debut before landing the Ascendant Stakes at Haydock in dominant fashion. The colt comfortably overcame the step up in class to make all and win a shade cosily for the Godolphin team. The son of Too Darn Hot did have the run of the race that day, but when William Buick asked him to pick up, he responded well to fend off his rivals to win by just under a length. He looks one to continue improving and I would be disappointed if he doesn’t have a strong say in this.
KING OF LIGHT – 14:10 Haydock
The Stuart Williams-trained runner has posted some nice performances in defeat this season, including last time out when finishing a never-nearer fifth in the Betfred Portland. Held up in the early stages of the contest, KING OF LIGHT made nice progress under Billy Loughnane and powered home inside the final furlong to be beaten less than two lengths. A drop to the minimum trip for this two-time course and distance winner looks set to suit and he could have a strong chance in this contest.
TALISMANS TIME – 17:45 Ripon
The Ed Bethell-trained runner has posted two nice performances at York this season, but he proved a shade disappointing when last seen at Carlisle. TALISMANS TIME was a good third behind a pair of three-year-olds at the Knavesmire and ran another good race there when stepped up to two miles to finish fifth. If he can put the Carlisle run behind him, he looks capable of taking this contest if able to handle the undulating track at Ripon.
INDIAN RIVER – 17:30 Market Rasen
Adrian Keatley’s four-year-old INDIAN RIVER looked to improve for every run last season and posted a career best when third in the Grade-One 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle, behind Mange Tout and Selma De Vary. Prior to that, he was tenth in the Triumph Hurdle, making a mistake at the last when finishing nicely from the rear of the field. He has been climbing up the weights and now finds himself on a mark of 135 but there still could be bigger things to come, especially now in much calmer waters back in a handicap.
COME ON OVER – 20:30 Southwell
David O’Meara has been keeping COME ON OVER busy this month and the gelding has hit the crossbar on his last three runs, including just eight days ago when beaten a nose at Wolverhampton. Sat in second throughout, he picked up well turning for home and finished his race strongly to only just be denied, having got alongside the winner right on the line. The son of Kodiac was raised just 1lb for that second and looks sure to get his head in front soon, and this looks a great opportunity for him.
