19:18 Stratford – Class 4 (0-115) Handicap Hurdle 2m6f7y

Prince De Juilley is 10lb above his last winning mark, but has twice gone close in recent starts and was presumably thought in need of the run on his return at Worcester, as he went without any headgear, which is not the norm for him. The cheekpieces in which he’s gained two of his three wins (visored for the latest) are back on now and he should be able to step up on that Worcester effort now returned to the course and distance of his most recent success.

He was in good form throughout the autumn last year, winning here and finishing second on four other occasions, with his length defeat by Tankardstown Diva at Ludlow in October reading particularly well given the mare who beat him has won twice since, including off a 12lb higher mark. Despite seeming to need the run last time (telegraphed by a big drift in the market), he stayed on nicely up the straight for fourth and looks to have returned in good heart. Lion Of The Desert should ensure a strong gallop and Prince de Juilley will be hard to kick out of the places given his consistency.

19:48 Stratford – Class 5 (0-100) Handicap Hurdle 2m2f148y

Katzoff, having his first start for Dan Skelton after leaving Ian Donoghue, is likely to attract most of the attention here, and further entries later in the week certainly hint at a plan, but he is now a 46-race maiden, and surely that has to set one or two alarm bells ringing. The nine-year-old has been with Ian Donoghue, and even accepting Skelton’s excellent record with others’ cast-offs, that stable switch is not the universal positive that some will assume, and to say Donoghue is no mug would be a huge understatement. Skelton can turn around some modest performers, but the words “silk purse” and “sow’s ear” spring to mind about this particular project.

Brooklyn Lullaby hadn’t shown a lot in three qualifying runs but it was a lot better at Southwell on her handicap debut where she tanked along in rear after meeting significant early interference which put her out of position. She became a little detached from the main field before running on for a six-length fifth and was value for finishing much closer to the winner. She gave the impression a step up in trip could unlock a bit more improvement, and should keep improving with time and experience, so looks worth chancing at appealing odds.
