Champion trainer John Gosden leaning towards Queen Anne Stakes bid for mare Terebellum at Royal Ascot

John Gosden is leaning towards dropping recent Newmarket winner Terebellum back to a mile for Tuesday's Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The daughter of Sea The Stars oozed class and showed a bright turn of foot to win the Group Two Betfair Dahlia Stakes over 10 furlongs at Newmarket last Saturday, her first public appearance since finishing fifth in the Prix de l'Opera at Longchamp.

With the Prince Of Wales's Stakes another potential target next week, it appears connections will plump for the day one feature should she line up at the big meeting behind closed doors.

Speaking on Racing Welfare's live digital Royal Ascot Preview Evening, in association with Sporting Life, Gosden said: "Having spoken to Frankie (Dettori) about it this morning we're probably leaning towards Terebellum in the Queen Anne.

"She's in great form since the Dahlia Stakes.

"No (we weren't using Newmarket as a prep for Ascot), but we were always playing with the idea. We were thinking Prince Of Wales's Stakes initially, but the Queen Anne looks quite open at this stage."

Another filly set for a swift turnaround next week is the Gosden-trained Run Wild who spreadeagled her field in Sunday's Betfair EBF Pretty Polly Fillies' Stakes.

"We're going to roll the dice with her and run in the Coronation Stakes," said Gosden. "She's got some very sporting owners and we're all willing to go for it. We're doing things a little bit unconventionally this year."

Gosden also had news on his potential contenders for Wednesday's Prince of Wales's Stakes, in which recent Haydock scorer Lord North and Mehdaayih may represent the champion trainer.

He said: "We're looking at a mile and a quarter for Lord North next but at the moment we're leaning towards Mehdaayih here. She's in sparkling form and she runs well fresh - she may well be Frankie's mount in the Prince of Wales's."

On Stradivarius' bid for a third straight Gold Cup bid, Gosden said: "He ran a superb race in the Coronation Cup from my view point and he cooled out exceptionally well. He took his race very well. He went in there at 80 per cent and the race has put him spot on.

"I didn't want to take in a two and a half mile Group One without a race under his belt and Frankie wasn't too hard on him.

"I wouldn't want to see much more rain, he's a superior horse on fast ground. The fact he got so close on the ground on Champions Day was testament to his class. But we're happy with him."

Stradivarius' Newmarket conqueror Ghaiyyath looks set for a clash with Gosden's star mare Enable in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown next month and the trainer said: "I was trying to convince Charlie Appleby to run him in the Prince of Wales's Stakes last night but he didn't make an entry do I didn't do a great job there did I?!

"He's a magnificent horse, especially if he gets a lot of space around him - he can gallop.

"Enable is very well. She's in great form and is very enthusiastic, she doesn't like anything going out in a morning before her."

On being asked by panel host Nick Luck whether or not he thought Newcastle handicap scorer Palace Pier was streetwise enough for next Saturday's St James's Palace Stakes, in which he's due to face 2000 Guineas second and third, Wichita and Pinatubo, Gosden said: "Itā€™s not a normal year and these horses donā€™t get many chances. They deserve their chance but if they get caught out for greenness ā€“ thatā€™s life. At least youā€™ve given it a try.

ā€œWithout Parole (won the race for Gosden in 2018) had a proper run in, three races before Ascot, and we havenā€™t had that luxury with him (Palace Pier), but thatā€™s life.

"The Guineas was a proper Guineas and there was no hiding place. They got racing early and that probably cost the favourite but he ran well."
