Glorious Goodwood day four - live tips, videos, previews and reaction

Battaash landed the King George Qatar Stakes for the second year at Glorious Goodwood and you can recap the action.

Glorious Goodwood - Day four recap

1550: Haggas was right that he had Muthmir in rip-roaring form and what can you say about Take Cover? David Griffiths has trained this old stager like a master and he's done the yard proud once more in the race.

Take Cover's King George form figures at Glorious Goodwood now read: 12142.

Just phenomenal.

1548: Here's the conundrum - he's now 4/6 with Sky Bet for the Nunthorpe.

Do you go in again at those prices, knowing he's blown out in the race before? It's an interesting one but York can get very lively in the paddock on a big Saturday and I do wonder if they've been able to look after him a bit better today in the relative quiet of the Glorious Goodwood pre-parade.

One or two firms are offering odds-against and I'd imagine there won't be many takers at the short prices at this stage.

1540: Another glorious performance from speedball Battaash. There's hardly a finer sight in Flat racing than a top-level sprinter leaving decent performers toiling in their wake and Jim Crowley got an armchair ride there.

This Twitter reaction to our video post just about sums it up...

RESULT - Goodwood 3.35

1st BATTAASH (8/11 favourite)

2nd Take Cover (20/1)

1530: The King George Qatar Stakes is next up and Battaash is out to 4/5 having been a bit shorter earlier on in the day. I'm drawn to Muthmir following Haggas' very positive words on his after Seniority's victory, but something will have to go wrong with the favourite as he's so far clear on all the ratings.

Battaash does appear to have taken all the preliminaries very well.

If he's to blow out, then Muthmir and Havana Grey look like the value alternatives but sadly it's a watching brief only for me.

Sky Bet's latest Price Boost sees Battaash currently 5/6 from 4/5.

1520: In case you missed it earlier, here's an update from Teddy Grimthorpe on last year's Arc heroine Enable.

He said: "Enable worked on the Al Bahathri on Wednesday.

"It was nothing very serious, but she showed a good action, and attitude as well, and she's taking little steps towards a comeback run. York would be a nice option, but we will certainly not push her to get there just for that race and we have the option of the September Stakes at Kempton (September 8) if not."

I may be reading this completely wrong, but that's not too positive is it? I'm immediately worried that the Juddmonte International isn't even an option here. I mean, the September Stakes?

She can't exactly have bombed up the Al Bahathri, can she?

1508: Now, there were horses getting mullered all over the place there. Escobar got stopped eight times and I'm convinced Frankie hasn't absolutely got to the bottom of runner-up Poet's Society, but Seniority has come from the midfield, behind a lot of those affected by scrimmaging up the straight, and he's ultimately won quite comfortably.

Ryan Moore does indeed bring up the hat-trick in this race and he's done so by being on the best-handicapped horse in the race again. But he really is superb, isn't he. You very rarely see him getting buried on the inside behind a wall of horses.

Winning trainer William Haggas said: "I was thrilled to bits, the horse was in superb form coming here and to be fair James Doyle has given Original Choice a brilliant ride too. To get where he did from stall 17 - what a genius."

1500: FIRE BRIGADE IS WITHDRAWN - the vets took a look and weren't happy at the start. Stand by for the result, they are loading fast.

1455: The Sporting Life darts Podcast lads will be going radio rental if Escobar lands the gamble here. Hold onto your novelty hats.

1444: For what it's worth, 'we' (the office) have a combination trifecta on the go in the big heat. I won't bore you with the details as one or two of them clash with the suggestions in the Podcast but Firmament, Poet's Society and Escobar are among the picks.

After a glance through the live markets, I can confirm that Poet's Society - one of Ben Linfoot's Value Bets - is strong in the betting at 14/1 with Dettori taking over from Ollie Stammers, while last year's winner Master The World, Original Choice - who ran well here earlier in the week - and Ian Williams' Shady McCoy have attracted support.

Seniority has been joined at the top of the betting by Escobar, both of whom are drawn superbly in 3 and 2 respectively.

If you're tempted into an each-way play (or three) then Sky Bet are paying down to SIX places instead of the usual four, at 1/5 odds.

1430: Frankie Dettori only returned from suspension yesterday and is back in the winner's circle after guiding Regal Reality to victory for a Sir Michael Stoute double in the first two races today.

The horse had had 71 days off since his comeback at Sandown when sixth behind Without Parole and has come back with a very promising effort, picking off front-runners Ostilio and Chief Ironside before coming right away at the finish.

It's a winning start to Ed Chamberlin's each-way double suggestion today, with the winnings (horse drifted right out to an SP of 10/1) rolling onto the well-drawn Escobar in the Unibet Golden Mile.

RESULT - Goodwood 2.25

1st REGAL REALITY (10/1)

2nd Ostilio (4/1)

3rd Chief Ironside

1421: Sky Bet are remarkably paying THREE places on this now six-runner field. You can place your bets via this link.

1420: The Aidan O'Brien-trained Threeandfourpence is the pick of the paddock according to Chris Dixon on Racing UK.

1418: Mike Cattermole has been in sizzling form with his tips this week and has added to the tally with Mirage Dancer in the first time. Threading is the selection in the next with a couple at bigger prices still to run - his preview of today's action is available here.

1408: A little Newmarket birdie has just informed me that Lester Piggott will be attending racing with his family at Haydock tomorrow in celebration of his first ever winner, exactly 70 years ago to the day.

On September 28, Marcus Townend or the Daily Mail wrote the following:

"He was a cherubic 12-year-old and Britain was still in the throes of post-war rationing when Lester Piggott rode the first of his 4,493 winners on The Chase in Haydock's Wigan Lane Selling Handicap on August 18, 1948.

"The austerity London Olympics had just ended and on the same day Don Bradman retired from Test cricket at The Oval after being out for a duck in his last innings."

A 12-year-old... 12! Just incredible.

How about this Stewards' Cup footage from yesteryear. Just magnificent.

1405: Mirage Dancer has frustrated connections a bit in his career so far but there's no crabbing him today after that ready success. Could he be even better as a five-year-old next year? That's the Stoute way I suppose. Which begs the question - what on earth was I doing backing one his two-year-olds first time out at Ascot the other week?!

RESULT - Goodwood 1.50

1st MIRAGE DANCER (6/5 favourite)

2nd Red Verdon (6/1)

1335: This is a proper plunge on Mirage Dancer in the first. He's now 6/5, with Eminent the only one attracting a bit of support in opposition.

It's Money Back as a free bet with Sky Bet if your selection finishes second.

1304: Not a bad week for Mark Johnston so far, with two winners yesterday following Dark Vision's fantastic Vintage Stakes success in the second race of the meeting.

Following Royal Big Night’s victory in the Smarkets EBF Novice Stakes at Epsom last night, the Middleham trainer now has 4,179 career winners in Great Britain and he is just 15 away from breaking Sir Richard Hannon’s record.

Best chance today? Surely Threading in the Group Three mile race at 2.25. They were tempting to go for the Nassau or even the Sussex with this filly and have opted for the easier contest.

Given how good the three-year-old fillies look this season, in relation to the colts at least, it's not hard to see this horse - who won so well at this meeting 12 months ago - taking advantage of the weight she received from the boys today.

1250: Ed Chamberlin makes a reasonable point in his brief video preview here regarding the King George Qatar Stakes and more specifically, the odds-on fav Battaash. He boiled over and didn't run his race in last year's Nunthorpe (something he hasn't repeated since) and could be one to sit tight with until the very last moment if he's behaved on the way to the start.

That could be too late of course if he's 4/9 by then but like every bet under the sun it is a balancing act and every individual is likely to have a slightly different view.

Personally, if I was having a very significant sum of money on an odds-on chance over the sprint course at Glorious Goodwood then I would not be leaving anything to chance and would definitely wait and potentially take a hit on the price.

There was nothing wrong with the attitude - pre-race or during - of Battaash in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot and if anything he was possibly a touch unlikely to miss out to Blue Point late on having helped force the pace.

1245: Whatever you're backing in the Golden Mile, make sure it's drawn low. Because they can't win from out wide, can they. Can they?

Our trends guide may shed some light on that very matter.

1240: Seniority isn't the only steamer today as there are three really short-priced horses who are all proving popular. If you're a fan of Battaash, Mirage Dancer and Threading then that fairly tempting treble is currently paying around 12/1. Throwing in Seniority too takes it up to 66/1.

Mirage Dancer is one who I've never really warmed to yet. He's a Frankel, trained by Stoute and ridden by Moore and putting all those factors together has generally seen him get over-bet a little too often for my liking.

I did like how he performed in defeat when back up to 1m4f at Newmarket's July Course last time but he was still put in his place and Second Step and Red Verdon are two very solid, high-class horses in opposition today. Eminent is in there too but there are massive question marks over him this year and at 5/1 (well backed, again...) I'm swerving him. In fact he's the kind of horse you should be putting into the My Stable tracker as one to oppose every time he runs.

1230: Afternoon all. Still going strong? You better be. Seven more mouth-watering contests to get stuck into on one of the most idiosyncratic racecourses in the country, not to mention tomorrow's Stewards' Cup card.

Yes, it's day four of the Qatar Goodwood Festival and as you'd expect following yesterday's warm temperatures, the ground has dried again and is now officially Good to Firm, Good in places.

There are one or two (positive and negative) market movers which reflect that going change and I'm sure we'll get onto those but what's clear in the big betting heat is that punters can hardly get enough of William Haggas' Seniority, owned by Her Majesty the Queen and ridden by Ryan Moore, who bids for a third straight success in the race following victories on Franklin D (7/4!) and Master The World (6/1).

Can he deliver the goods again? Stall three theoretically shouldn't stop him and nor should the underfoot conditions. Either way, there are SIX places up for grabs with Sky Bet.
