WATCH: The New One - Aintree Hurdle
Second the year before when bustling up Zarkandar as a novice, The New One went one better in typically gutsy fashion. He was the odds-on favourite but it got desperate for his backers near the finish, Rock On Ruby and a fast-finishing Diakali making him pull out all the stops. There was a head and a nose between the trio at the line.
WATCH: Holywell - Mildmay Novices' Chase
Holywell was another to feature in yesterday's archive when second to Solwhit over hurdles but he went on to be even better as a chaser and this was a superb novice performance from the Jonjo O'Neill-trained runner. Beating subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Don Cossack and the Grand National hero Many Clouds - who was fourth - must be regarded as one of Holywell's career highlights.
WATCH: Ma Filleule - Topham Chase
Nicky Henderson has done really well in the Topham over the years and it was his mare Ma Filleule who turned the 2014 Topham into something of a procession. She went on to be second in the following season's Ryanair Chase and was evidently well treated running off a mark of 150.
WATCH: Balder Succes - Maghull Novices' Chase
Balder Succes came to a sad end at Aintree in 2015 but that was also the scene of his greatest triumph in the Maghull Novices' Chase. Alan King's horse has a fantastic engine and was a fine jumper on his day, flying at the final fence here before going on to beat the gallant Simply Ned.
