Mark Johnston has only suffered three blanks at Royal Ascot since 1994 and he got off the mark for this year's meeting when Permian bounced back from a disappointing run in the Derby to win the King Edward VII Stakes at 6/1.

The Teofilo colt has improved in leaps and bounds this season, winning three of his four starts including the Dante Stakes where he had Friday's race favourite Crystal Ocean back in third.

Sir Michael Stoute's runner gave vain chase in the straight but wilted in the closing stages as the Johnston runner galloped on relentlessly and it was left to Khalidi, 14th in the Epsom Classic, to burst from out of the pack, only for the line to come in time for Permian.

It was a 40th Royal Ascot winner for Johnston, who said: "It's a bit of a relief to get on the scoresheet after a blank last year, our first since 1994, and I was dreading the idea of another blank so it's great.

"It's great for the horse after the disappointment in the Derby, a lot of people said it was too soon to come back so I had a lot of agonising and it was only a last-minute decision.

"William said he felt like a horse who didn't handle the track (at Epsom) which was strange as he'd run well there before, but he just felt today he felt a different horse so I think he had an off-day in the Derby - it happens.

"I'll have a think about where next, he's won two Group Twos so we need a Group One, it won't be the Irish Derby though, I can tell you that, that is too soon."

One race which may have a bearing on the season's remaining Classics was the Queen's Vase, run for the first time as a Group Two over a reduced trip of a mile and six furlongs.

The honours went to Stradivarius who saw off a determined challenge by Count Octave and they could be joined by third home Secret Advisor at Doncaster in the late-summer.

Winning trainer John Gosden said: "He's a St Leger-type of horse, improving all the time, he's got a great attitude and it's great for Andrea, I think that's only his second Ascot winner. I feel sorry for Frankie (Dettori, who is injured), that's another winner he's missed.

"I thank Frankie for getting them all ready, I'm just sorry you weren't here my friend."

Caravaggio cemented his reputation as one of the most exciting sprinters around in extending his unbeaten record in the Commonwealth Cup. while Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore also teamed up to land the Coronation Stakes with dual Guineas winner Winter to put the layers on the back foot.

The day had started with a good result for bookmakers as Different League, Irish owned and French trained, sprung a minor surprise when winning the Albany Stakes at 20/1 to spark tumultous scenes in the winner's enclosure.

There was another 20/1 winner of the finale as Rare Rhythm continued a fine week for Godolphin, Charlie Appleby and William Buick with victory in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes.
