Joao Moreira (6) and Zac Purton (4) have ridden ten winners between them in the last week – and yet following the pair blindly over those two meetings would still have yielded a small loss.
Therein lies the dilemma when trying to crack the HK punting puzzle but that won’t stop punters getting behind the big two again at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Joao and Zac have ten and nine rides respectively but there could be some mileage in taking the big two on in the better races, starting with Ka Ying Master in the featured Carbine Club of Hong Kong 30th Anniversary Handicap at 8.05.
Two of HK’s strongest AW closers line up for this £230,000 AW dash and Will Power and Silver Fig will both have plenty of supporters.
However, KA YING MASTER is no mean dirt horse himself and a fine Happy Valley second on his reappearance hints that he’s still handicapped to score from a mark of 86 under Derek Leung.
Two impressive recent course and distance scorers square off over the minimum trip in the Opal Handicap at 8.35 and there probably won’t be much between Cordyceps Six and Super Fortune in the market.
The handicapper has hiked the pair by 9lb and 11lb respectively and preference is for CORDYCEPS SIX, who is progressing fast under Jerry Chau and can reward support again with Super Fortune, Metro Warrior and Run Run Cool appealing for the Quinella perm.
Moreira is always worth noting when he rides a horse for the first time and if he replaces one of the local journeymen the hint can be doubly significant.
The Magic Man takes over from Alex Lai on Sky Forever in the closing Tourmaline Handicap at 9.45 and Manfred Man’s gelding looks bound to go close after catching the eye at long odds on both his last two starts.
But there will be no fancy prices on offer this time. It’s worth noting newcomers Rise Brethren and Turin Redsun, who showed smart form when known as Liffey River and Mithras for Joseph O’Brien and the Gosdens, but ALL BEAUTY looks the safe call.
Frankie Lor’s Aussie import has progressed well in a four-start career, winning with authority over 1200m at Happy Valley in September then finishing a good fifth upped to 1400m here last month.
All Beauty shaped better than the bare result that day, doing much better than most of the others who attended a true gallop, and the Lor man continues to lead the way at the top of the trainers’ table with 25 winners at an impressive 17 per cent strike rate.
8.05: Ka Ying Master
8.35: Cordyceps Six
Quinella combining 2, 3, 6, 11.
9.45: All Beauty (Win and Place)
