Frankly Darling impressive winner of Ribblesdale

John Gosden saddled his 50th Royal Ascot winner as Frankly Darling took the Ribblesdale Stakes.

A winner at Newcastle on her seasonal reappearance and Matt Brocklebank's 66/1 ante-post tip for the Investec Oaks, the winner tracked the pace under Frankie Dettori.

He kicked her clear two furlongs out and the race was over, for all Ennistymon finished strongly down the middle of the track to finish second.

Her stablemate Passion was never able to land a blow in third.

Betfair and Paddy Power initially halved the winner in price to 4/1 for the Epsom Classic but have since gone 3/1 - the same price as Sky Bet.

Dettori told ITV Racing: "She ran with the choke out a bit and I was pleased Josephine was there to lead me and go a good pace. I got her to relax turning for home and she had every chance to get tired but found another gear and it was a good performance.

"She showed she stays well. It was a good experience for her today and I thought it was pretty much a very good performance.

Gosden added: "Mr Oppenheimer is a fabulous owner-breeder. The filly has done very well. She only ran once at Chelmsford at two and luckily got in on the first day back at Newcastle. If I hadn't got her there I couldn't have got here as we're playing catch-up.

"She's learning about racing and was pretty raw still and green in the first part but certainly powered away. We'll see how she is over the next ten days and make our mind up about the Oaks. Mr Oppenheimer is a sportsman and he'd like to go I'm sure."

Michael Shinners, Head of Sports PR at Sky Bet said: "That was a very taking performance. She travelled extremely well and then put the race to bed with a striking turn of foot . The daughter of Frankel looks to hold a huge chance in the Investec Oaks and is now clear second favourite at 3/1 behind Love who is still market leader at 6/4."

Of his landmark 50th success, Gosden added: “I’m 50 not out! I came to this meeting once and scrambled a winner and another year I had no winners. I remember having six seconds one year – it’s not an easy place to win races.

“I think getting Royal Ascot on is a huge achievement. This country and many countries around the world have suffered horribly from this sinister (coronavirus) disease. It’s been devastating what people have been going through, let alone the destruction of our economy and people losing jobs. It’s a worldwide problem.

“To be able to come here in this very large amphitheatre, in the fresh air – it’s very clean and everything is very tightly run.

“It’s wonderful to be able to put on top-quality sport with the best races and racehorses you can find anywhere in Europe, and some from America. We have great athletes and great jockeys, so it’s great the show is going on.”
